GM preps Buick plug-in hybrid concept based on Chevy Volt for Guangzhou auto show

General Motors will unveil a plug-in hybrid concept car -- dubbed the Buick Velite -- at the Guangzhou auto show later this month.

The vehicle is a variant of the Chevrolet Volt and will make its global debut on November 18. GM said it will provide a template for upcoming models being launched under the Buick Blue new energy vehicle strategy.

The Velite is fitted with a powertrain which comprises GM's SIDI gasoline engine, an electric drive and a lithium ion battery pack.

The Pan Asia Technical Automotive Center, GM's Shanghai-based engineering partnership with SAIC Motor Corp., designed the concept.

A Reddit user recently spotted what appears to be a Buick-badged, second-generation Volt.

Autoweek, a sister publication of Automotive News China, reported last week that the Velite is a rebadged Chevrolet Volt. In Europe, the Volt is sold as the Opel Ampera and the Vauxhall Ampera.

The Velite would be the second hybrid vehicle in Buick's Chinese lineup. In August, GM China introduced a hybrid version of the Buick LaCrosse.

The automaker has said it plans to roll out additional hybrids under the Buick brand.
