Chinese overall installed capacity of power batteries reaches 36.24GWh in 2017

Shanghai (Gasgoo)- The total installed capacity of China's power battery set a new record high in China, according to Shenzhen Gaogong Industry Research Co., Ltd (GGII), a service provider for lithium-ion battery, electric vehicle, robotic, LED, new materials, and emerging strategic industries in China. Thanks to the remarkable NEV output and sales of nearly 800,000 units in 2017, the overall installed capacity of EV and PHEV's batteries reached around 36.24GWh in 2017, jumping 29.4% compared with 28GWh in 2016.

The overall installed capacity of top ten power battery companies totaled about 26.81Wh, taking up 74% of the total installed capacity of the power battery industry. Particularly, CATL achieved a total battery installed capacity of 10.58GWh, accounting for nearly 30% of the overall industry capacity. With an annual installed capacity of 5.66GWh, BYD followed CATL, according to the statistics from GGII. 

Lithium-iron phosphate (LFP) took up 50% of the 2017 power battery deliveries, ternary lithium-iron battery 45%, while lithium-manganese spinel (LMO) and lithium titanate (LTO) only took up 4% and 1% of the total deliveries respectively.

In terms of vehicle types, installed capacity of passenger vehicles' batteries reached around 13.7GWh with an increase of 50% over the previous year. Specialty vehicles installed capacity soared 165% on an annual basis to 8.4GWh. The installed capacity of buses dropped 10% year on year to 14.3GWh.

It can be easily seen from the data released by GGII that ternary lithium-ion battery took up large market shares of both pure electric passenger vehicles and plug-in hybrid passenger vehicles. Ternary lithium-ion battery is expected to see a rising of market shares thanks to the greater merits in energy density than LFP.

A vast majority of OEMs prefer LFP for new energy buses. LFP was also most widely used in pure electric buses, and LMO is second to LFP, while most plug-in hybrid buses used LMO. The new energy trucks mainly were pure electric trucks, whose 70% market shares were taken up by ternary lithium-ion battery. Besides, LFP and LMO also took some shares.
