More Chinese to buy German cars if US Big 3 fall

By Ally  From:Gasgoo.comDecember 04, 2008

Shanghai, December 4 (Gasgoo.com) More than 50% of Chinese consumers will choose to buy a German brand car if the US' "big-three" automakers - GM, Ford and Chrysler, do fall, a survey shows.

Of 6,442 Chinese consumers who take the survey conducted by the Beijing Youth Daily and Souhu.com, 56.42% of them say they will not buy a US brand car if the Big Three giants go into bankruptcy.

About questions as to what they will buy instead, 50.37% of interviewees say they prefer a German brand car, 21.96% choose Chinese brand cars while another 20.62% will buy Japanese-brand cars. The remaining buyers go to South Korean and French brand cars.

In another Morpace Omnibus study of 1,016 interviewees made in North America, 21% of them say they are currently "very likely" to buy a vehicle from Chrysler, Ford, or General Motors. But if the company of interest were to go bankrupt, only 10 percent say they would be "very likely" to purchase.

The Big Three automakers submitted detailed plans to Congress on Tuesday to plead for $34 billion in emergency aid. Hearings start Thursday morning.
