Volvo recalls S80 cars in China over wiper fault

By George Gao  From:Gasgoo.comMay 12, 2009

Shanghai, May 12 (Gasgoo.com) Swedish automaker Volvo Car Corp said it started yesterday to recall 3,136 imported S80 sedans in China due to windshield wiper flaws, xinhuanet.com said.

In a report to China's top quality supervisor -- the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine, Volvo said it had identified a deviation in the Central Electronic Module (CEM) software in its S80 cars that may cause malfunction of the windshield wipers.

If this happens, the windshield wipers may not work when needed, or they may work when not activated. These problems pose some safety hazard to the car's driving, especially on a rainy day.

However, Volvo added that the long-wheelbase the S80L version locally made in China (by Changan Ford Mazda) has no such fault and is not included in the recall list this time.

The affected Volvo S80 sedans were all imported and produced between January 24, 2006 and June 4, 2007. Volvo and its Chinese dealers will contact the owners and inspect the CEM and upgrade the software free of charge.
