FAW builds 100,000-unit light truck plant in Harbin

By Ally Liu  From:Gasgoo.comMay 31, 2009

Shanghai, May 31 (Gasgoo.com) FAW Harbin Light Vehicle Factory laid the foundation stone for its 100,000-unit light truck facility in Harbin's Pingfang Development Zone on Wednesday, one day before the dragon boat festival, reported Xinhua.

The new factory will be ready in one and a half year and is being built with an investment of 1.4 billion yuan (US$208 million).

The new facility will reportedly serve as the major light truck production base for the planned joint venture between GM and FAW. The two sides reached initial agreement this February to build commercial vehicles in China, but no further progress was made since then.

The Harbin Light Vehicle Factory is a wholly owned subsidiary of the FAW Group. The 44 year-old auto factory started as a military-industrial plant making heavy military trucks, and in the mid-1990s, the factory partnered with FAW Group to make pickups, Jiefang trucks and mini-vans for the Chinese auto giant.
