Renault and Great Wall to jointly build cars in Venezuela

By Ally Liu  From:Gasgoo.comJune 23, 2009

Shanghai, June 23 (Gasgoo.com) French carmaker Renault is contemplating plans to assemble vehicles in Venezuela starting 2010 in a partnership with Chinese manufacturer Great Wall Motors, Automotive News reported.

Renault and Great Wall de Venezuela have signed a non-binding letter of intent to carry out a feasibility study on building cars together for the Venezuelan market, Renault spokesman told the newspaper.

Production would start at a plant currently owned by Great Wall's local partner, in the Province of Carabobo, 150 Km from the capital Caracas.

The two companies plan to initially build 22,000 cars every year, with about 15,000 units for Renault and the remainder for Great Wall. Renault would assemble Logan saloo and the Sandero hatchback in the plant, with spare part sets imported from Columbia.

A final decision on the project will come out in the coming months, according to the report, citing company spokesman.

Renault is set to strengthen its links with China, despite the sale of several of its cars being banned because of safety and technical problems ten days ago.
