Kia Motors union to launch strike over wages

From:ReutersJuly 15, 2009

Unionized workers at Kia Motors Corp, South Korea's No.2 auto maker, plan to launch a partial strike for two days over wages and working conditions, the union said on Wednesday.

Both day and night shift workers at Kia are scheduled to suspend work for six hours each on Wednesday and Thursday, the union said on its website.

Unionised workers will also stop overtime work from Wednesday, it added.

"We have tried to avoid a strike this year, but we could not narrow the gap with the management," a union spokesman told Reuters by telephone.

Company officials declined to comment.

The action comes as Kia, an affiliate of the country's top carmaker Hyundai Motor Co, has recently outperformed its peers at home and abroad helped by growing appetite for smaller cars.

Kia's sales fell 5.93 percent in the first half of this year, compared with a 15.32 percent decline in combined sales of the country's five automakers.

Shares in Kia rose 4.01 percent to 14,250 won as of 0118 GMT, outperforming a 1.85 percent gain in the wider market.
