Spain unions says no deal with Magna over Opel

From:ReutersOctober 14, 2009

Spanish labour unions said on Tuesday no agreement had been reached with Canadian car parts manufacturer Magna over jobs in Spain at the Opel car factory in Zaragoza.

"The meeting has finished without any kind of agreement," said head of the workers committee at Opel Spain, Juan Arceiz.

Union heads were meeting with officials from the central and regional governments and with Magna representatives in Madrid.

The Spanish Opel plant at Figueruelas currently employs 7,500 workers and prospective owner Magna had proposed cutting between 1,300 to 1,650 jobs there.

Magna's initial restructuring plans for Opel, which involve laying off more than 10,500 workers in Europe, have run into stiff opposition from European governments.
