VW China set to make cars more energy efficient

By George Gao  From:Gasgoo.comOctober 21, 2009

Shanghai, October 21 (Gasgoo.com) Volkswagen AG will reduce the per-kilometer fuel consumption and exhaust emissions of its China-made cars by 20% before 2010, respectively, Dr. Zhang Suixin, vice president of Volkswagen Group China, said yesterday in Beijing at the 2009 SAE-China Congress, SinoCast reported.

To achieve the goals, VW China plans to apply more cutting-edge technologies to its factories, in addition to its newest ground speed indicator (GSI) technology and gearbox technology, said Dr. Zhang, adding that conventional engines still have huge potential for improving the energy saving and emission cut.

A latest automobile technology of VW can help lower fuel consumption by 3 liters per 100 kilometers and cut carbon dioxide emissions to 27 grams for the same length, according to the company's demonstration at the recent Frankfurt Motor Show.

Meanwhile, VW estimated that new energy cars, such as electric cars, would not contribute substantially to the world's energy efficiency and emission reduction until ten or 15 years from now, as carmakers still need time to achieve mass production of such vehicles at acceptable costs.

China has become Volkswagen's fastest growing market, with its sales in the Chinese mainland and Hong Kong up 37% to 1.06 million units in the first nine months this year.

Volkswagen expects to reach its goal of selling 2 million vehicles annually in China by 2018 "earlier than planned," the company said in a recent statement.
