Chinese automakers Oct. sales performance summary

Shanghai (Gasgoo)- China's vehicle sales in October reached 2.38 million units, edging down 0.6% over the previous month, while evidently dropping 11.7% from a year ago, according to the data released by the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM). For the first ten months, China saw its year-to-date (YTD) vehicle sales slightly decline 0.1% year on year (YoY) to 22.871 million units, presenting YoY downturn for the first time of the year.

Gasgoo hereby rounded up the sales data released by corresponding Chinese automakers as below. SAIC Motor was crowned the Oct. sales champion while still faced a YoY drop of 8.4%. Dongfeng Motor Group, Changan Automobile and JAC Motors all came across double-digit YoY decline in Oct. sales. Great Wall Motor, having YoY drop for 3 consecutive months within the third quarter, saw its Oct. sales edge up 1.93% over the year-ago period. 

SAIC Motor

Chinese automakers Oct. sales performance summary

SAIC Motor reported a YoY drop of 8.4% in sales with 601,877 vehicles delivered in October. For the first ten months, the automaker delivered 5,748,433 vehicles in total, a YoY increase of 4.9%.

The top 3 subsidiaries by October sales were SAIC-GM, SAIC Volkswagen and SAIC-GM-Wuling. All three companies failed to gain better sales performance than that of a year ago. In addition, SAIC Maxus, Naveco and Sunwin Bus saw their sales in October fall 10.6%, 15.2% and 51.7% over the year ago period.

SAIC Motor PV's monthly sales still kept rising with 60,003 units handed over in October. SAIC-GM's deliveries shrank 9% over a year earlier in October, while climbed 3.5% YoY for the first ten months. SAIC Volkswagen saw its sales decline 7.1% over the year-ago period to 180,000 units. However, it still achieved a YoY increase of 1.8% in terms of year-to-date (YTD) sales. Affected by the overall economic climate and the internal competition, SAIC-GM-Wuling sold 161,833 vehicles with a YoY drop of 15.8% last month. 

Dongfeng Motor Group

Chinese automakers Oct. sales performance summary

Dongfeng Motor Group Company Limited (Dongfeng Motor Group) reported a YoY decrease of 14.64% in sales with 267,720 vehicles delivered in October. For the first ten months, the group's YTD sales fell 4.82% from a year ago to 2,462,040 units.

Dongfeng Motor Company Limited (DFL) gained a YoY increase of 6.37% with 1,225,892 vehicles handed over through October. It is noteworthy that all units under DFL achieved positive YoY growth in YTD sales. Although Dongfeng Venucia and Dongfeng Nissan's monthly sales shrank 6.61% and 7.96% from the previous year, their respective Jan-to-Oct sales still represented YoY growth of 2.21% and 6.15% thanks to the favorable performances in previous months. 

Three major joint ventures, namely, Dongfeng Honda, Dongfeng Renault and Dongfeng Peugeot Citroen Automobile (DPCA), all suffered YoY decline in terms of cumulative sales this year. Dongfeng Honda's sales in October jumped 28.1% from a year earlier. However, two Sino-French joint ventures, Dongfen Renault and DPCA witnessed their Oct. sales plunge 61.4% and 56.79% from the previous year.  

GAC Group

Chinese automakers Oct. sales performance summary

GAC Group announced that its sales in October reached 181,601 units with an apparent year-on-year (YoY) growth of 13.24% and the Jan-Oct sales climbed 6.99% from a year ago to 1,757,068 units.

GAC Motor attained a YoY growth of 1.58% with its Oct. sales reaching 46,168 units. By the end of October, the automaker has fulfilled 62.97% of the 700,000-unit annual sales target with a total of 440,760 vehicles sold so far this year.

GAC Honda's year-to-date (YTD) sales rose 9.42% from the year-ago period to 68,867 units with 79.46% of the 750,000-unit sales goal completed already. According to the sales data from Honda China, the Accord, the Fit and the Vezel were rather popular among consumers with their sales reaching 18,562 units, 11,962 units and 12,548 units respectively in October.

GAC Toyota saw its Oct. sales soar 67.11% from a year earlier to 55,508 units. A total of 477,362 vehicles were sold from January to October, with 82.30% of the 580,000-unit sales target finished. The eighth-generation Camry had an Oct. sales volume of around 14,400 units, somewhat less than that of the previous month.

Changan Automobile

Chinese automakers Oct. sales performance summary

Changan Automobile said that its Oct. sales plunged 35.2% over a year ago to 170,575 units, the sixth straight month facing year-on-year (YoY) drop. For the first ten months, the automaker delivered 1,818,191 vehicles in total, a relatively steep YoY decline of 21.7%.

The sales of Changan Automobile's self-owned brand exceeded 1.2 million units during the first 10 months among which over 800 thousand units were passenger vehicles.

As to the performance of joint ventures, Changan Ford had a sales volume of 26,938 units in October, tumbling 67.3% over the year-ago period and sliding 18.4% over the previous month. In addition, its Jan-Oct sales were nearly halved compared with the same period a year ago.

Changan Mazda posted a YoY decrease of 18.1% with its Oct. sales reaching 15,155 units. By the end of October, a total of 143,649 vehicles were delivered for the Sino-Japanese automaker, a YoY decline of 7.3%. 

Geely Auto

Chinese automakers Oct. sales performance summary

Geely Auto announced that its sales (including the Lynk & Co brand) in October edged up 3% from a year ago to 128,986 units, among which 8,101 units were NEVs and electrified vehicles. For the first ten months, the automaker sold 1,265,844 vehicles in total, achieving an impressive YoY growth of 33%. By the end of October, 80% of the 1.58 million-unit sales goal has been completed for the vehicle maker.

Speaking of sedan segment's performance, the sales of the Geely Emgrand in October faced an evident YoY drop of 24.7% with 20,349 units delivered. Besides, the monthly sales of the Geely Borui and the Borui GE aggregated 3,558 units, 32.7% less than that of the previous month. The Geely Binrui, hitting the market on August 30, has already had sales up to 12,609 units within two months.

The Geely Boyue still remained its leadership among the automaker's SUV products. Its sales totaled 219,048 units from January to October, edging down 2.6% compared with the same period a year ago.

The Lynk & Co brand had a sales volume of 15,207 units last month, up by 2.2% compared with the September. The sales of the Lynk & Co 01, 02 and 03 were 8,476 units, 5,766 units and 965 units respectively. 

Great Wall Motor

Chinese automakers Oct. sales performance summary

Great Wall Motor posted a YoY sales growth of 1.93% with 110,088 vehicles delivered in October. However, its Jan-Oct sales fell 3.29% from a year earlier to 786,756 units among which the sales of Haval and WEY brands were 552,094 units and 116,381 units. By the end of October, 67.82% of the 1.16 million-unit sales target has been fulfilled.

The company saw its SUV sales rise 2.02% YoY in October to 95,840 units, while slide 5.91% YoY for the first ten months to 668,475 units. The Haval Oct. sales grew 4.05% over the previous year, the first time in 2018 that achieved YoY positive growth in monthly sales.

The premium SUV brand WEY suffered a YoY drop of 32.68% in October, while its year-to-date (YTD) sales soared 160.84% from the year-ago period to 116,381 units. Last month, the sales of the WEY VV7, VV5 and VV6 (hitting the market on August 27) reached 2,552 units, 4,004 units and 4,017 units respectively. The WEY P8 plug-in hybrid SUV had a monthly sales volume of 311 units. 

Chery Holding

Chinese automakers Oct. sales performance summary

Chery Holding saw its sales in October grew 13.5% from the previous year to 63,703 units, achieving evident year-on-year (YoY) increase for 8 consecutive months, according to the sales report released by the automaker.

Last month, the group's NEV (new energy vehicle) sales skyrocketed 379.1% over the year-ago period to 10,205 units. Meanwhile, it exported 8,829 vehicles, 14.1% more than that of the previous month.

For the first ten months, Chery Holding's year-to-date (YTD) sales rose 15.2% from a year earlier to 592,514 units. A total of 107,342 vehicles were exported with a YoY jump of 20.2%. Besides, its cumulative NEV sales soared 249.3% to 69,884 units. 

BYD

Chinese automakers Oct. sales performance summary

BYD delivered 48,497 new vehicles in October, which made its Jan-Oct sales grow to 400,068 units, according to the company's sales report. 

Last month, BYD sold 20,830 fossil fuel-powered vehicles, among which 3,583 units were cars, 7,231 units were SUVs and 10,016 units were MPV. BYD said the sales of the Song MAX skyrocketed 148% year on year (YoY) to 10,016 units, exceeding 10,000 units for 12 consecutive months. For the first ten months, the company saw its fuel-burning vehicle sales aggregate 228,983 units. 

The NEV sales were 27,667 units in October, among which 26,066 units were new energy PVs with an impressive YoY jump of 121%. The hottest seller should be the BYD Tang whose sales reached 10,049 units last month, topping 10,000 units for 3 months in a row. In addition, the sales of the BYD Qin family were 7,226 units in October and totaled 150,000 units since it hit the market. The e-platform-based Yuan EV360 has cumulated sales over 21,490 units after it went on sales at the end of May.

JAC Motors

Chinese automakers Oct. sales performance summary

JAC Motor's Oct. vehicle sales slumped 24.38% YoY to 33,536 units. Especially, the SUV monthly sales were almost halved over a year earlier to 5,486 units.

The automaker's cumulative sales through October chalked up 395,095 units with a YoY decline of 7.49%. To be specific, the YTD sales of SUVs and MPVs amounted to 78,516 units and 49,968 units, shrinking 22.37% and 8.58% respectively compared with a year ago. Many CV segments came across evident YoY drop as well. The sales of the medium-duty trucks and heavy-duty trucks presented YoY fall of 31.31% and 20.19%.

A total of 44,631 all-electric passenger vehicles were delivered for the first ten months for JAC Motors, showing a YoY leap of 115.17%.
