Great Wall Motor to build BEVs at annual capacity of 100,000 units in Taizhou plant

Shanghai (Gasgoo)- Chinese automaker Great Wall Motor (GWM) plans to manufacture all-electric cars at an industrial park of Taizhou, Jiangsu Province, according to an environmental impact assessment report released by the Department of Ecology and Environment of Jiangsu Province.

With an annual capacity of 100,000 units, the BEV project is part of businesses for Taizhou plant, GWM's eighth complete vehicle manufacturing base that was put into construction on November 11, 2019.

Covering an area of 485,200 square meters and involving a total investment of RMB4.86 billion, the BEV production facility will be composed of stamping, welding, painting and assembly workshops as well as relevant annex buildings, according to the governmental filing.

GWM's Taizhou project comprises a complete vehicle production base and an automobile technology industrial park. Products to be produced will be Haval-branded vehicles based on the new platform and NEVs. The first-batch complete vehicles are set to roll off the production line in December, 2020.

Some local media outlets revealed that the Taizhou plant is scheduled to manufacture two all-new BEV models bearing the badge of ORA. Both yet-to-be-produced models will sit above the existing ORA iQ and R1.

ORA, GWM's BEV brand launched in April 2018, has so far put two pure electric models onto the market. Of which, the ORA R1 accounted for 71% of the company's cumulative NEV sales for the first eleven months of 2019, GWM said. The model was also ranked eighth among NEV models in China by Jan.-Nov. retail sales, according to the China Passenger Car Association.
