Jianghuai Tongyue debuts at Guangzhou show

Kelly From Gasgoo.com| November 18 , 2008

Shanghai, November 18 (Gasgoo.com) Tongyue, the first A-class car by China’s Jianghuai Auto, is displayed at the Guangzhou auto show starting today, auto163.com said.

The new Tongyue is priced between 49,800 yuan ($7,290) and 66,800 yuan, announced by Jianghuai Auto at its official launch ceremony held yesterday. Previously codenamed Jianghuai A137 (hatchback) and Jianghuai A138 (sedan), the hatchback is officially named "Tongyue RS" and the sedan "Tongyue" now.

An earlier report by gasgoo.com has unveiled that the Tongyue sedan and hatchback will be powered by a Mitsubishi 1299cc 4G13 engine capable of 69Kw max that meets the Euro IV emission standards and consumes less than 5.5L in 100km's drive. The two five-speed manual models are co-developed by Jianghuai Auto and Italian company Pininfarina. They differ only at the rear.

Positioned as an A0-class car, Tongyue has many competitive rivals in this segment market, including the market leader Tianjin FAW with its Vizi, Vela, and Vizhi which are all based on Toyota's NBC platform and the Geely's low-priced Kingkong and Gold Eagle. However, Tongyue may still get a growth margin as Jianghuai Auto is superior to Geely on manufacturing and technical adaptation levels.

On the whole, the largest difficulty faced by Tongyue is the low brand awareness in the market, especially at a time when massive own-brand small car models like Chery Futwin Coupe II, Changan V101 are to be launched during the Guangzhou auto show. The A0-class Tongyue may be dependent on its high price- performance ratio and relatively good driving performance.
