Tesla said to move China user data to China from U.S.

Shanghai (Gasgoo)- Tesla will reportedly move the data and certification service of China users from the U.S. to China, Shanghai Securities News reported on June 23.

As part of preparations, Tesla is recruiting in China data center engineers, storage engineers, database engineers and other information technology operation and maintenance personnel.

According to the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA), the sales of locally-produced Tesla Model 3 reached 11,095 units in May, making the BEV the best-selling NEV model of that month. The other two startup-made NEV models ranked among the top 10 was the NIO ES6 and the Leading Idea One, while both of them failed to post sales of over 3,000 units last month.

For the first five months, the Model 3 was still the hottest-selling China-made NEV model with 30,800 units sold, 14,318 units more than the runner-up—the all-new BYD Qin EV.

Nonetheless, due to the global spread of novel coronavirus, the high-profile EV manufacturer suffered gloomy sales at its headquarters California, where it only delivered 6,260 and 1,447 vehicles in April and May.

Obviously, China is getting increasingly important to Tesla's overall performance. “The key to Tesla's stock remains the staggering China growth rebound, which is important for the company to hit the goal of 1 million delivery vehicles annually in a few years,” said Dan Ives, an analyst from Wedbush Securities.

Moving the server to China from the U.S. would help Tesla better serve their Chinese users with faster service respond and greater reliability by coping with such problems as the unstable connection in Tesla App.

Apart from the aforementioned recruitment, Tesla's China branch is also gathering the feedback from Chinese car owners and correspondingly updating the following plans.

In China, Tesla recently caught the eye of the industry with the presence of its LFP-battery-powered locally made Model 3 in the MIIT's catalogue. It portends that the cost of building a Model 3 may be further decreased, leading to a lower price in the future.
