Shanghai (Gasgoo)- China's southernmost province of Hainan launched on October 13 its first batch of roads for open tests and demonstration application of intelligent vehicles, according to the Hainan Provincial Department of Industry and Information Technology.

Spanning 129.2km in total, the newly-opened roads exist in four cities—Haikou, Sanya, Wenchang and Qionghai, offering abundant scenarios for companies to have road tests.

Notably, the 88.7-km-long testing road stretching across Wenchang, a county-level city in the northeast of Hainan province, is the longest one ever launched in urban areas of China. As part of Hainan island-looping tourism highways, the Wenchang-located road with the island’s unique characteristics is able to provide a raft of scenarios for companies conducting ICV road tests and promoting ICV demonstration.

Hainan's authorities issued on August 14 the Administrative Rules on the Regulation of Road Testing and Demonstration of Intelligent Vehicles (for Trial Implementation) (hereinafter referred to as the “Rules) which has come into effect on October 1, 2020 with a validity period of two years.

The issuance of the Rules will help Hainan make use of its advantages in the preferential policies for a free trade port, the testing environment, the full coverage of 5G network and the widespread popularization of new energy vehicles, so as to make Hainan a big draw for more companies in carrying out road tests, R&D and pilot applications of intelligent vehicles.

Hainan Tropical Automobile Test Co.,Ltd., will serve as the third-party organization, which is commissioned by a joint working group to oversee and manage the daily intelligent vehicle road tests and pilot applications.
