Shanghai (Gasgoo)- Shanghai expects the annual output value of its new energy vehicle (NEV) manufacturing industry to reach around 350 billion yuan ($54.123 billion) by 2025, according to a document Shanghai municipal government issued earlier this week.

The document is about the 14th five-year plan for the development of Shanghai's strategic emerging industries and leading industries. During the 2021-2025 period, Shanghai will further raise the proportion of all-electric and fuel cell vehicles in new vehicle sales, prompt key automobile manufacturing companies to speed up the transition to the emerging industries with strategic importance, and nurture an array of small- and medium-sized auto parts suppliers with over 10 billion yuan of annual sales, according to the plan.

To achieve those goals, Shanghai will work harder on making breakthroughs in power battery technologies, improving the energy density, safety performance, and lifespan of batteries, enhancing the system integration, lightweight structuring, and control intelligence for high-power/-density electric motors and control systems.

As parts of the efforts to promote the market application of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles (FCVs), the megacity will strive to make breakthroughs in the core technologies related to such key components as membrane electrode, fuel cell stack, and proton-exchange membrane, lower the development and manufacturing cost of FCVs, and perfect the deployment of hydrogen-refueling stations.

As for intelligent-connected vehicle (ICV) development, Shanghai will encourage companies to step up cooperation on the R&D of the technologies and facilities like automotive-grade chip, onboard operating system, in-car AI-enabled computing platform, Internet of Vehicles (IoV)-based communications, LiDAR, millimeter-wave radar, professional testing equipment, drive-by-wire execution system, high-precision map, and sensors, and the commercial operation and application of ICVs in specific scenarios.
