Key Takeaways
·The companies plan to deploy 3 GWh of CATL's TENER sodium-ion energy storage systems over the next five years in markets including Germany, Switzerland and Austria, targeting grid-level peak shaving and commercial and industrial storage.
·CATL says the system offers up to 15,000 cycles and a designed operating life of 25 years, while maintaining relatively high discharge power at temperatures as low as minus 20 degrees Celsius.
·CATL and INTILION have worked on more than 30 energy storage projects in Germany since 2022, covering project delivery, local operations and maintenance, and grid connection.
·CATL said the partners will continue pursuing both sodium-ion and lithium-ion storage deployments in Europe.
·The cooperation will use INTILION's system-integration capabilities, sales channels and customer resources in German-speaking markets to support local deployment of CATL's sodium-ion solutions.
Technology and applications
CATL developed the TENER sodium-ion system for overseas cold-climate markets, including the low-temperature conditions found in higher-latitude parts of Europe.
Background
The memorandum builds on an existing partnership between CATL and INTILION rather than marking their first joint project.
What to Watch Next
CATL said European storage projects must address low-temperature operation, grid-access requirements and safety standards. The company described sodium-ion technology as a complementary option for the market and said the 3-GWh framework would advance the technology toward larger-scale commercial deployment in Europe.
