Gasgoo Munich- China's National Energy Administration has released new statistics on China's electric vehicle charging infrastructure.

Data shows that as of the end of May 2026, the total number of charging connectors nationwide reached 22.497 million — a 44.9% annual surge. Breaking down the figures, public charging connectors stood at 4.951 million, up 25.9% year-on-year, with a combined rated power of 242 million kW. The private sector is larger, with 17.546 million connectors — a 51.4% jump — accounting for an installed power capacity of 151 million kVA.

A comparison of growth rates reveals that private charging infrastructure is expanding far faster than its public counterpart. This segment has maintained a year-on-year growth rate above 50% for much of the year, signaling robust demand for home installations.

Power capacity is also on a steady upward trajectory. The average power per charging connector nationwide now sits at 48.89 kW, an 8.9% increase from a year ago, maintaining a consistent rise throughout the year. This shift reflects ongoing upgrades at public charging stations and a higher proportion of high-power fast chargers. As a result, the rapid replenishment capacity of charging sites is strengthening, better serving the charging needs of today's high-voltage EV platforms.

Analyzing the market structure, the boom in private chargers stems from the growing adoption of new energy passenger vehicles in homes. With installation procedures in residential communities becoming simpler, most buyers are opting for home units to handle daily overnight charging needs. Public charger growth, by contrast, has been more moderate, focusing on highway service areas, shopping districts, and logistics parks. These facilities aim to address pain points for cross-city travel and drivers without fixed parking spots — creating a complementary landscape between the two sectors.

The continuous expansion of charging facilities offers a clear sign that the supporting ecosystem for the new energy vehicle industry is maturing. Looking ahead, as fast-charging technology spreads and urban and rural charging networks become denser, the match between supply and demand for infrastructure will only improve. That will provide sustained support for the long-term, stable development of China's NEV market.
