China's EV charging infrastructure exceeds 20 million units

Gasgoo Munich - On January 21, data from the National Charging Infrastructure Monitoring Service Platform showed that China's total stock of EV charging infrastructure reached 20.092 million units by the end of December 2025. This represents a 49.7% year-on-year increase, bringing the total past the 20 million mark.

Of these, public chargers accounted for 4.717 million units, up 31.9%, while private chargers increased to 15.375 million, a 56.2% rise. China operates the world's largest EV charging network, supporting the charging needs of more than 40 million new energy vehicles.

Analysts note that 2025 saw continued quality improvements and upgrades in China's charging infrastructure, characterized by three main trends:

First, the pace of growth is accelerating. It took 13 years to go from the first charging station in 2006 to 1 million units by June 2019. Reaching 10 million by June 2024 took another five years. However, the increase from 10 million to 20 million took just 18 months.

Second, charging power is rising. The rollout of high-power facilities is accelerating, with the average single-gun charging power at public stations nationwide reaching 46.5 kilowatts. This marks a 33% increase in power year-on-year, significantly enhancing the service experience.

Third, coverage is widening. A total of 71,500 charging piles have been installed at highway service areas nationwide, covering over 98% of these locations. Furthermore, 19 provinces have achieved full charging coverage across every township.

In September 2025, six departments, including the National Development and Reform Commission and the National Energy Administration, jointly issued the "Three-Year Doubling Action Plan for EV Charging Infrastructure Service Capability (2025-2027)." The document outlines clear goals and action paths for the sector's near-term future. The National Energy Administration will strengthen coordination, refine the policy framework, and guide local governments to accelerate construction. The objective is to effectively boost NEV consumption and ensure the Action Plan achieves its targets.
