Gasgoo Munich- The China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) released automotive industry data for August 2026 on September 10. China produced 2.684 million vehicles and sold 2.712 million during the month, up 4.3% and 4.9% from July, respectively. Compared with a year earlier, production fell 4.7% and sales declined 5.1%.
CAAM Deputy Secretary-General Chen Shihua attributed the month-on-month recovery to expanded vehicle-purchase subsidies in several regions and active promotional campaigns by automakers. However, he said China's domestic market remained under pressure, with monthly sales recording year-on-year declines of more than 20% for five consecutive months.
New energy vehicles (NEVs) remained the strongest-performing segment. NEV production reached 1.653 million units in August, up 18.9% year over year, while sales rose 17.8% to 1.643 million units. NEVs accounted for a record 60.6% of all new vehicle sales during the month.
China exported 1.01 million vehicles in August, down 3.2% from July but up 65.3% year over year. Monthly exports exceeded one million units for a third consecutive month, providing a key source of growth for the overall market.
From January through August, China produced 20.255 million vehicles and sold 20.315 million, both slightly lower than a year earlier. NEV production and sales reached 10.668 million and 10.65 million units, respectively, with both increasing by more than 10%. NEVs represented 52.4% of total vehicle sales over the eight-month period.
