Gasgoo Munich- XPENG officially launched the G9L on September 17.
The event highlighted two main points. First, the product itself. Positioned as a large five-seater technology flagship, the G9L consists of six versions across two powertrains: pure electric and extended-range. Pure electric models range from 231,800 to 309,800 yuan, while extended-range versions are priced at 249,800 and 299,800 yuan. XPENG effectively integrates Series 9 specifications into the Series 6 price range: every trim comes standard with rear-wheel steering and dual-chamber air suspension, while the top-tier intelligent driving configuration features a computing power of 2,250 TOPS.

Second, the presentation structure. Chairman He Xiaopeng discussed technology and strategy, while brand spokesperson Yin Zheng delivered a dedicated 30-minute presentation. Speaking from an owner's perspective, Yin shared his authentic experience after a month of driving. While automakers frequently invite celebrities to launches, assigning the main slot to an endorser for such an in-depth session is uncommon.
Both the product's competitiveness and the launch format provide insight into XPENG's current strategy.
Three Pillars: Technology, Pricing, and Globalization
The domestic intelligent SUV market, specifically the 230,000 to 300,000 yuan bracket, is highly competitive, with hardware continuously evolving. The G9L's competitiveness relies on three pillars: technical hardware, strategic pricing, and global validation.
Intelligent driving hardware represents the G9L's core selling point. Although multiple XPENG models already feature the Turing AI chip, the G9L establishes a clear hierarchy based on chip count: the Max version uses one, the Ultra SE uses two, and the Ultra flagship uses three, increasing maximum effective computing power to 2,250 TOPS.

The G9L introduces the second generation of XPENG's VLA intelligent driving system, with the Max trim utilizing a lightweight, distilled version of the VLA model. This large model incorporates temporal understanding of the environment, capable of recalling road data from the past 30 seconds while predicting changes for the next six.
At the launch, He demonstrated several scenarios. When encountering construction blocking the lane, the vehicle slowed progressively, steered right to bypass, and made a U-turn when safe. When facing a roadside puddle, it steered slightly to the side, then returned to the lane once oncoming traffic cleared. When the car ahead stopped suddenly, the G9L decelerated proactively to navigate the obstacle steadily.
Regarding the chassis, the G9L features an axle-to-length ratio of 0.605, with a body length of 5,120 mm and a wheelbase of 3,100 mm. Every model comes standard with rear-wheel steering and dual-chamber air suspension, paired with all-aluminum suspension components and XPENG's proprietary X-VMC motion control system. This setup coordinates steering, suspension, braking, and power delivery to improve handling stability—a crucial factor for a vehicle of this size.

Data presented at the event shows the vehicle can achieve 80 km/h in the moose test. Drawing on his own experience, Yin described the driving sensation of this large SUV as "feeling smaller to drive than its dimensions suggest."
Pricing remains the G9L's primary tool for market competition. By integrating Series 9 features into the Series 6 price range, XPENG provides more hardware per unit cost. Whether this combination of software and hardware gains market acceptance will depend on upcoming order and delivery figures.
Maintaining low prices requires a product that can withstand rigorous validation, specifically global standards. The G9L's road testing covered 26 countries and regions, accumulating 6.74 million kilometers. These overseas tests required the vehicle to adapt to diverse traffic rules, road conditions, and driving habits. XPENG used this real-world data to refine its intelligent driving models and ensure compliance with safety regulations across multiple markets.
From a planning perspective, the G9L is not just a domestic flagship; it serves as a data collection tool for XPENG's future international expansion. The car is scheduled to appear at the Paris Motor Show in October, marking the beginning of its global rollout.
A New Approach to Celebrity Marketing
Historically, celebrities have played a passive role at auto launches: brief appearances, general brand praise, and rarely in-depth analysis of daily driving nuances.
XPENG differentiates itself by transforming in-depth sharing into a sustained campaign. During the MONA launch, spokesperson Ouyang Nana shared her experiences with the vehicle.

For the G9L launch, Yin Zheng's involvement deepened. His 30-minute session covered scenarios relevant to users: intelligent driving, chassis handling, interior space, camping, and highway stability. The content drew from a month of authentic ownership, largely avoiding marketing scripts. He cited a real-world test using a modified mobile filming setup to demonstrate body rigidity, power, and space from an owner's perspective.

Applying this approach to two consecutive models signals a shift in how XPENG values celebrity endorsements. The brand is moving beyond mere traffic generation, requiring endorsers to provide scenario-based interpretations grounded in real experience. The founder delivers the technical and strategic narrative, while the celebrity owner offers the user-side perspective—two viewpoints that complement one another.
As hardware specs converge across the industry, adjusting marketing strategies is how automakers find a distinctive advantage. XPENG's approach de-emphasizes celebrity traffic in favor of communicating product experience. Yet, the model has practical constraints: it requires endorsers to spend significant time with the vehicle, and its effectiveness ultimately depends on the product's actual performance. Whether this strategy converts to sales remains to be seen.
