Maextro Enters the Game, Rewriting the Landscape?

Edited by Greg From Gasgoo

Gasgoo Munich- Starting at 648,000 yuan, racking up 10,000 pre-orders in 23 days, and securing 2,115 firm orders within an hour of launch — behind these figures lies Maextro’s depth charge in China’s premium MPV sector.

On August 5, Maextro officially launched its MPV lineup, the V680 and V800. The V680 carries a price tag of 648,000 yuan, while the V800 offers three configurations ranging from 766,000 to 1.016 million yuan.

With a price band spanning 650,000 to 1 million yuan, the lineup covers the core sweet spot of China’s premium MPV market. The target is unmistakable: traditional stars like the Toyota Alphard and Lexus LM. Yet, Maextro’s product logic diverges sharply from its Japanese rivals. As Xiang Xingchu, chairman of JAC Group, put it: "Luxury is not a solitary peak, but a range of mountains reflecting each other." The subtext is clear: the arrival of the Maextro MPV is not a solo act, but a collective breakthrough for the entire Chinese automotive supply chain.

For decades, China’s genuine luxury market was monopolized by foreign brands, where product premiums relied heavily on brand halo and social status. The entry of the Maextro V800 signals the first time a Chinese brand has launched a full-scale frontal assault on the luxury segment — not with a single experimental model, but with a dual-pronged advance spanning both sedans and MPVs.

The significance of the V800 extends beyond simply adding a million-yuan vehicle to the domestic MPV camp; it marks the opening of another battle for the right to define the ultra-luxury market.

Maextro's Ambition

Richard Yu, Huawei’s executive director and chairman of the Consumer BG, revealed data at the launch: as of August 4, cumulative deliveries across the HIMA ecosystem surpassed 1.48 million units, ranking first in delivery speed among emerging automakers.

Maextro’s performance is particularly noteworthy. Since its launch, the Maextro S800 has rapidly become the vanguard of domestic cars challenging the luxury market. Over 13 months, it has delivered more than 19,000 units, holding the title of best-selling million-yuan luxury car for ten consecutive months. The implication is clear: Maextro has validated its presence in the million-yuan price bracket — not through hype or pre-orders, but through actual market deliveries. Now, its second luxury production model is entering the MPV fray. With over 2,000 firm orders in the first hour, the V800 and V680 duo have also crossed the threshold of market trust, proving with tangible results that this Chinese ultra-luxury brand is no flash in the pan. When the technological foundation is deep enough, category expansion follows naturally.

This success is no accident. Xiang revealed that to build the Maextro MPV, the team "constructed the industry’s first hardware-in-the-loop laboratory featuring full physical components and multi-dimensional data analysis, investing over 500 test vehicles and accumulating more than 13 million kilometers of equivalent testing."

Intense R&D investment is the bedrock of building a luxury car. At the very least, the Maextro S800 has demonstrated that this no-expense-spared approach works in the million-yuan segment. Chinese brands do have a chance in this market, provided the product strength is formidable and the technological differentiation distinct enough — high-net-worth users are willing to pay for it.

The arrival of the Maextro MPV is precisely an extension of this product logic. From sedan to MPV, and from a single category to a multi-product matrix, Maextro is executing a strategic upgrade from "single-product breakthrough" to "multi-product portfolio."

Of course, whether the Maextro V800 can maintain a foothold in the niche million-yuan MPV segment depends on a combination of factors: post-delivery quality reputation, actual product performance, and the brand’s ability to build user value that transcends a mere configuration checklist. Yet, Maextro has undoubtedly taken the most substantive step by a Chinese brand in the luxury MPV arena.

Maextro V800: Revaluing Luxury Through Intelligence

If the competitive focus of traditional luxury MPVs lies in brand perception and status, then the Maextro V800 offers a completely different solution — technology-driven differentiation. The core of this differentiation is the re-evaluation of luxury through intelligence.

Xiang noted that Maextro follows a development path of "one vehicle driving the entire chain," propelling hundreds of suppliers from simple coordination to chain-based innovation. This reveals the industrial logic behind the V800: it is not merely a car, but a vessel for the collective upward breakthrough of the entire supply chain.

The Maextro V800’s most notable technological breakthroughs are concentrated in two dimensions: chassis and intelligent driving.

On the chassis front, it is built on Huawei’s new Tuling Longxing platform, making it the industry’s first MPV equipped with 800V full active suspension and steer-by-wire technology.

Such chassis specifications first address the industry-wide ailment of large MPVs being "hard to drive." Due to their size, large MPVs often feel clumsy in steering and prone to body roll. Yet, by leveraging 800V full active suspension and steer-by-wire, the Maextro V800 successfully reconciles the conflicting demands of spacious interiors and agile maneuverability in a vehicle over five meters long.

The full active suspension uses motor-driven hydraulic pumps to actively control body posture. Combined with the multi-source information cross-validation and collaborative control of the Domain Fusion Architecture 2.0, issues like acceleration squat, brake dive, and cornering roll are effectively suppressed. Steer-by-wire technology simplifies the mechanical connection between the steering wheel and wheels, transmitting commands via electronic signals with millisecond-level speed. Paired with ±12° rear-wheel steering, this 5.5-meter-long behemoth achieves a minimum turning radius of just 5.4 meters — comparable to many A0-segment cars under 4 meters in length.

The core of this chassis philosophy lies not in simply stacking hardware, but in systematically resolving the inherent physical disadvantages of large MPVs through the coordination of perception, decision-making, and execution.

The full active suspension brings more than just handling improvements; it enables functions previously unimaginable in an MPV. The Maextro V800 supports "jump-to-escape" mode: if wheels sink into sand, the suspension rapidly controls the wheels to bounce up and down, creating a "shaking-sand" effect to help the vehicle free itself autonomously. Additionally, the car features active lift protection for road obstacles; paired with Huawei’s Qiankun ADS 5 system, the suspension can actively lift the body by 80mm to avoid undercarriage scrapes. The V800 also supports one-click leveling, automatically adjusting the body to a horizontal state when parked on uneven terrain like campsites.

On the intelligent driving front, the Maextro V800 launches with Huawei’s Qiankun ADS 5 system, equipped with 40 sensors including six lidars. It features a forward dual-redundant lidar matrix and an all-directional matrix of four high-precision solid-state lidars.

The V800 incorporates an enhanced architecture reserved for future higher-level assisted driving, utilizing a quadruple-redundancy computing setup with dual sensor groups, dual connectors, dual SoC chips, and dual power paths. Yu stated at the conference that this architecture "is ready for commercial deployment the moment national L3 regulations are approved."

At the hardware level, the Maextro V800 is prepared for L3 autonomous driving, going beyond merely satisfying current L2+ capabilities.

In the cabin, the Maextro V800 features a new-generation integrated triple screen and a 41.6-inch retractable projection screen for the second row. However, the interior truly reflects Maextro’s philosophy of "revaluing luxury through intelligence" via a series of novel scenarios. Yu highlighted several innovations: a seat system developed with the China National Institute of Standardization and East China Normal University that adapts to different body postures; and an "Emotional Energy Cabin" created with the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, leveraging psychoacoustics and multi-sensory science. This achieves deep sensory fusion across vision, hearing, smell, touch, and spatial perception, offering Deep Sleep, Focus Awakening, and Joyful Decompression modes.

360° three-dimensional intelligent interaction is another standout innovation. Forward dual-million-pixel full-color smart projection headlights, side full-color projection lights, and full-color smart interactive taillights form a unified 360° three-dimensional interactive welcome system. No matter from which direction guests board, they are met with a consistent sense of occasion.

Privacy protection on the Maextro V800 has been elevated to an unprecedented level. Front electric privacy curtains, rear electric privacy shades, side high-density electric sunshades, side smart privacy glass, and a retractable interactive starry headliner achieve physical-level seclusion for the second and third rows.

An original L-shaped elevated center console creates a partition between the front and rear cabins, integrating charging, private storage, and an air-cooled onboard fridge. An optional private drink bar supports one-touch coffee and tea extraction. Beneath the front seats lies a unique hidden electric shoe box equipped with an antibacterial and deodorizing system.

Connecting these innovations reveals the Maextro V800’s product logic: it is not doing addition — simply stacking more configurations, larger screens, or more speakers — but multiplication. The combination of full active suspension, steer-by-wire, rear-wheel steering, jump-to-escape, and road preview addresses the inherent flaws of large MPVs being hard to drive, inflexible, and lacking in passability. Innovations like the Emotional Energy Cabin, 360° interaction, and all-around privacy address the experiential gap where MPVs are mere tools lacking emotional value. ADS 5 intelligent driving and the L3-ready architecture address the era’s deficit of technology and intelligence in MPVs.

As these gaps are systematically filled, the Maextro V800 effectively re-answers a fundamental question: What, exactly, should an ultra-luxury MPV be?

Seizing Power in a Shrinking Market

Looking forward, the Maextro V800 faces a series of challenges. The first immediate reality is that the domestic MPV market’s overall performance is far from optimistic.

Data doesn’t lie. Retail data from the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) shows that in the first half of 2026, domestic MPV sales totaled 417,000 units, a year-on-year decline of 17.9%. The MPV segment’s share of the overall market has not expanded significantly. After peaking at 5% in 2023, share actually contracted over the next two years to 4.7% in 2024 and 4.5% in 2025. While the first half of 2026 saw a slight rebound to 4.8%, the trend remains fragile.

Yet, in stark contrast to the market’s gloom, enthusiasm on the supply side is remarkably high. Since the start of 2026, roughly 10 new mid-to-high-end MPV models have been released or launched. The influx of products is clearly outpacing the growth of market capacity, inevitably intensifying the competition.

The divergence between rapid supply expansion and shrinking demand signals a brutal battle of "too many monks and too little gruel" in the MPV lane. However, it must be pointed out that alongside the total market contraction, a structural shift is underway. As foreign brands continue to lose ground, the substitution effect of domestic brands in the 300,000-yuan-and-above premium MPV segment is accelerating, with market acceptance of domestic high-end MPVs steadily rising.

Data compiled by Gasgoo Automotive Research Institute shows that domestic brands’ share of the high-end MPV market exceeded 61% in 2025, while Japanese, Korean, and American brands continued to shrink. As consumers demand more in terms of space, comfort, and intelligent features, the domestic high-end MPV market still holds significant room for rapid development.

微信图片_20260605172254_91_1683.png

Automakers are flocking to the high-end MPV segment despite limited market capacity, driven by a combination of profit, branding, and technological factors. Against a backdrop of white-hot price competition and squeezed margins in sedans and SUVs, mid-to-high-end MPVs have become a rare "oasis" of profit — often commanding higher premiums than comparable SUVs.

In recent years, a cluster of Chinese high-end MPVs led by the Denza D9, Voyah Dreamer, Zeekr 009, and Wey Gaoshan has risen rapidly. In the 300,000 to 600,000 yuan bracket, they are already trading blows with joint-venture models like the Toyota Sienna. Now, the even more premium market above 600,000 yuan is becoming the next fortress to be conquered.

The Maextro V800’s opportunity lies in using intelligence and chassis prowess to establish a new standard for luxury MPVs. The product shortcomings of traditional foreign million-yuan MPVs are becoming glaringly apparent: aging hybrid systems ill-suited for the quiet demands of electric commuting, semi-active suspensions that cannot cure body pitch and roll, intelligent features that lag far behind domestic new energy models, and spatial designs that fail to fit contemporary high-end business travel scenarios.

The current mismatch between supply and demand has created a market window for domestic brands to break through. The Maextro V800 indeed offers differentiated advantages in safety, intelligence, comfort, and driving dynamics. It presents target users with a value proposition completely different from the Alphard: not the traditional "comfortable and prestigious," but "intelligent, tech-driven, private, and scenario-based." If this value proposition gains market acceptance, it will bring not a fight for market share, but the creation of new growth.

Summary:

From a macro perspective, China’s MPV market in 2026 is undergoing a cognitive reconstruction from brand premium to technological experience. Consumer understanding of luxury is fundamentally shifting — away from simple brand halo and social currency, and toward a combination of technological strength, scenario-based experience, and product detail.

Whether the Maextro V800 can seize the right to define this new era depends on post-delivery quality stability, the actual experience of its intelligent driving system, and the brand’s ability to convert first-time buyers into long-term trust. If the V800 can withstand the test of the market over the long term, it could mark the dawn of a new era — the moment Chinese brands truly begin to hold the power of definition in the ultra-luxury MPV sector.
