NIO ES9 hits market, presenting a new competitor to AITO M9

Edited by Aya From Gasgoo

Gasgoo Munich- On the evening of May 27, NIO's ES9 officially hit the market with a starting price of 498,000 yuan. With the Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) option, that drops to as low as 390,000 yuan, putting it in direct competition with the AITO M9 in the high-end flagship SUV arena.

In a twist of timing, the new AITO M9 also launched in Shenzhen that same day. Huawei Executive Director Richard Yu didn't hold back: "This is the most powerful SUV on the planet, bar none."

Built on 11 years of technical expertise as a pure-electric executive flagship, the ES9 enters the fray with a full-size interior, a 900V high-voltage architecture, SkyRide 48V active suspension, and a high-end audio system. Backed by over 40 industry-first technologies, it's poised to be a strong contender in the 500,000-yuan segment, further diversifying the premium flagship SUV landscape.

DirectlyTaking Aim at AITOM9

Both 500,000-yuan flagship SUVs, the NIO ES9 and AITO M9 target overlapping high-end demographics with nearly identical product positioning. Yet they diverge in technology paths, driving dynamics, and luxury atmosphere, carving out distinct identities.

In terms of size, the ES9 measures 5,365mm long with a 3,250mm wheelbase, making it one of the largest pure-electric SUVs in China. That extended wheelbase translates to generous interior space. The cabin boasts over 2.8 meters of longitudinal depth and up to 1.2 meters of legroom in the second row. Even with a full load, the trunk retains 800 liters of capacity—ready for anything from family road trips to business engagements.

Compared to rivals in its class, the ES9 holds a clear advantage in its native electric space layout, a massive 216-liter front trunk (frunk), and an ultra-low 19cm step-in height.

Chassis refinement and ride quality are the ES9's key features. It features the world's only mass-produced SkyRide 48V integrated active suspension. With 95% fewer connecting lines than traditional split setups and a response time under 6 milliseconds, it actively cancels vibrations and pre-emptively filters bumps. NIO founder William Li claims the system sets a new technological benchmark for comfort and driving feel.

The ES9 also packs steer-by-wire and rear-wheel steering, delivering a tight 5.4-meter turning radius that makes the large vehicle surprisingly agile. A proprietary VSC body management system and multi-terrain modes balance city cruising with off-road capability. The AITO M9, meanwhile, features autonomous control over an 800V active suspension, dual-valve continuously variable dampers, and dual-chamber air suspension.

Luxury and comfort are tuned for the executive experience. The aviation-style zero-gravity seats feature a 17-layer structure with 22-point massage and the industry's first mechanical foot massage. World-first array-type LC smart privacy windows offer 99.8% shading without sacrificing openness. Dual 16-inch executive screens, an 8.8-liter smart refrigerator, and folding executive tables create a complete mobile office and lounge.

Acoustically, it's equipped with a 47-speaker sound system paired with advanced NVH engineering for an immersive auditory experience.

On intelligence and safety, the ES9 runs on NIO's in-house Shenxing NX9031 smart driving chip and the SkyOS vehicle-wide operating system. This setup delivers high bandwidth, low latency, and massive computing power, enabling cross-domain fusion, continuous evolution, and high reliability across heterogeneous hardware.

The vehicle boasts powerful edge-side inference and all-weather perception capabilities. It also features NOMI Intelligence 4.0, a voice interaction system enhanced with an emotional engine to make human-machine interaction smarter and more natural.

For autonomous driving, the ES9 employs NIO's Aquila super-sensing system with 31 high-performance hardware units. Integrated with the NIO World Model (NWM), it enables point-to-point autonomous navigation, along with battery swap guidance, intelligent offset parking, and safety assists. The system has already actively avoided or mitigated over 5.7 million accidents, demonstrating exceptional performance in complex road conditions, lane adaptability, and safety redundancy.

Powered by Battery Swap Ecosystem, Forging a Path in the Premium Market

The ES9's launch isn't just about introducing a flagship model; it's about differentiation. By combining a native electric platform with a battery-swapping ecosystem, NIO is carving a unique niche in the premium market, joining the AITO M9 in expanding the landscape for domestic high-end new-energy flagships.

The ES9's key competitive advantage lies in NIO's mature battery-swapping network. Currently, there are over 3,800 swap stations nationwide, with plans to add more than 1,000 by year-end. A seamless 3-minute swap effectively alleviates charging anxiety for large electric vehicles. Combined with a 900V high-voltage platform, a 102 kWh battery, and 620 km of CLTC range, the ES9 is optimized for long-distance travel and business scenarios.

The flexible BaaS option further lowers the entry barrier for this flagship, making premium electric mobility accessible to more users. The AITO M9 relies on a diverse powertrain lineup to appeal to a broad audience. The ES9, however, offers a superior solution for those seeking a pure electric experience through its native platform and swapping capabilities.

In terms of brand and user ecosystem, NIO has established a strong presence in the premium electric market, building a solid foundation in service systems, user operations, and luxury perception. The ES9 solidifies the brand's footprint in the executive flagship segment. The AITO M9, meanwhile, leverages extensive channels and brand influence to quickly capture market attention.

While both target overlapping high-end demographics, subtle differences in usage scenarios and experience preferences mean they complement rather than replace each other.

With the ES9 officially entering the market, the 500,000-yuan domestic flagship SUV market is becoming richer and more diverse. NIO's ES9 and the AITO M9 each bring distinct strengths to the competition, jointly driving the sector beyond simple spec-sheet comparisons toward a higher tier of systemic, technological, and experiential rivalry.
