Xiaomi Skynomad: Another Hit in the Making?

On the evening of September 7, Xiaomi’s autumn product launch did more than unveil the flagship Xiaomi 18Fold smartphone; it showcased the company’s proprietary advancements in chips, AI large models, and operating systems. For the automotive sector, however, the spotlight was on the debut of the Xiaomi Skynomad series. Comprising four models across the N70 and N90 lineups, the new series is priced between 209,900 and 299,900 yuan.

Scarcely had the event concluded when Xiaomi EV released its initial market figures: the Skynomad series racked up over 10,000 locked orders in just four minutes.

Amid a less-than-favorable market window, those 10,000 orders stand as proof that demand for the Skynomad series is real.

From the SU7 sedan to the YU7 SUV and now the Skynomad, Xiaomi EV has expanded its portfolio from pure electric sedans to SUVs and extended-range SUVs in just two and a half years. Before the new models even took the stage, Xiaomi Group founder, chairman, and CEO Lei Jun announced that cumulative deliveries had already surpassed 800,000 vehicles.

The first 800,000 units were driven by the buzz surrounding the SU7 and YU7. With the addition of the Skynomad series, however, the challenge shifts. Having satisfied the initial curiosity, Xiaomi must now answer a tougher question in a brutally competitive market: why choose this one?

Xiaomi Enters the Extended-Range Market

Anyone tracking industry data closely will notice that while the extended-range (EREV) market was once on fire, it has seen sustained volatility following a flood of new product launches. This is hardly an opportunistic moment to enter the fray.

Data compiled by Gasgoo shows that the domestic EREV market share stood at 6.7% in July 2026. While that is a distinct rebound from previous months, it remains far removed from the sector's peak — and still lags significantly behind the 8.1% share recorded in January 2026.

Cumulative sales in the domestic EREV market totaled 564,600 units over the first seven months of 2026, an 18.23% year-on-year decline. Looking at specific models, only five EREVs sold more than 5,000 units in July, and just one broke the 10,000 mark.

The heat has certainly gone out of the EREV market.

Focusing solely on the segment's contraction, it would be easy to conclude that the Skynomad has arrived too late. Yet a critical fact remains: the market's retreat is not due to vanishing demand, but rather a shakeout in supply.

The core selling point of early EREVs was freedom from range anxiety. But in 2026, as pure electric ranges top 800 kilometers and 800V high-voltage platforms dip below 200,000 yuan, that advantage is no longer scarce. The demand that remains is shifting: buyers no longer want an EREV just for the sake of it — they are asking what else it brings to the table.

It is precisely on this dimension that the Skynomad series has carved out its differentiation.

For starters, the 'large battery' EREV strategy is a key highlight. The Skynomad N70 Pro carries a 52 kWh LFP battery, delivering 351 kilometers of CLTC pure-electric range and 1,351 kilometers of total range. The N70 Max, N90 Max, and N90 Max Explorer editions all feature 76 kWh ternary lithium batteries, offering over 460 kilometers of electric range and total range exceeding 1,400 kilometers.

For daily commuting, the Skynomad functions essentially as a pure electric vehicle. The range extender is there to ease anxiety on the occasional long-haul trip, not for the daily grind. This 'electric-first, fuel-assist' philosophy effectively redefines the category. Where early EREVs were electric cars with generators attached, the Skynomad is closer to an electric car with a backup fuel tank.

That subtle positioning shift means the Skynomad is not really competing in a shrinking EREV sector. Instead, it targets the massive cohort of swing buyers who want the EV experience but worry about charging on longer journeys.

Crucially, Xiaomi’s pricing backs up this product definition. At 209,900 yuan for the N70 Pro, 239,900 yuan for the N70 Max, 269,900 yuan for the N90 Max, and 299,900 yuan for the N90 Max Explorer, the official prices sit noticeably below the industry’s expected 250,000 to 350,000 yuan window. Combined with generous launch incentives, the value proposition is amplified.

The combination of low pricing and high perks sends a clear market signal: Xiaomi is not merely testing how much room is left in the EREV sector. It is using a one-two punch of price and perks to force a decision — not about whether to buy an EREV, but about whether to miss out on this price point.

This reveals the true logic behind Xiaomi’s timing. It is not fighting for market share during the EREV boom, nor trying to hold onto users during the downturn. Instead, by combining product form with pricing strategy, it has created a decision funnel that bypasses the question of 'whether to go EREV' and goes straight to 'which Skynomad to choose'.

Those 10,000 orders in four minutes are validation that this funnel works.

The Skynomad Series’ Competitive Moat

If the SU7’s competitive moat was 'Porsche handling at the 200,000 yuan level' and the YU7’s was a balance of aesthetics and performance in an electric SUV, then the Skynomad’s moat comes down to one word: space.

But this is not just about simple body dimensions or wheelbase figures.

To be sure, the numbers are impressive. The N70 measures 4,960 mm in length, 1,998 mm in width, and has a 2,950 mm wheelbase; the N90 stretches to 5,285 mm long with the same width and a 3,080 mm wheelbase. These stats place the pair squarely in the standard range for mid-size and large SUVs.

The true barrier, however, lies in how Xiaomi achieved them.

In the design logic of the Kunlun platform, interior space was not an afterthought of structural compromise — it was the starting point. This meant the chassis layout, battery placement, suspension structure, and body surfacing were all engineered to maximize interior volume, flexibility, and flatness.

A completely flat floor runs from the first row through the second to the trunk, spanning 4.01 square meters. Five ultra-long sliding rails, stretching up to 1.56 meters, allow the second-row seats to move 600 mm. These figures required significant engineering trade-offs: positioning the battery pack so it doesn't steal cabin height, placing the range extender without sacrificing the flat floor, and optimizing the suspension to clear space for the rails underneath.

This represents a product philosophy distinct from the mainstream 'sofa, big screen, refrigerator' arms race.

In the current market, competition among mid-to-large SUVs centers on who has the biggest screen, the coldest fridge, or the most massage functions — distinctions that are rapidly being erased. Once every rival comes standard with fridges, giant screens, and zero-gravity seats, true differentiation can only come from structural innovation. Skynomad’s focus on space is a path competitors relying on off-the-shelf supplier parts cannot easily replicate; it requires a fundamental reconstruction of the vehicle platform, not merely swapping components.

The N90 Max Explorer edition pushes this spatial logic to the limit. Its native electric lifting roof — a rarity in the domestic SUV market — stands 1,925 mm tall when closed, allowing access to standard city parking garages. When raised, the cabin transforms into a two-story Loft space with a maximum interior height of 2,294 mm, enabling a 1.8-meter-tall adult to stand upright in the rear. The upper activity area spans 2,110 mm by 985 mm, reinforced by an aluminum frame and aluminum honeycomb panels with a maximum load capacity of 200 kg.

The Explorer also reimagines the second-row seating concept. With a single click, it transforms into a bed without removing seats or adding mattresses — taking just 30 seconds to create a 1.87-meter by 1.24-meter sleeping area that can be split left and right. Factory-installed three-level floor heating (up to 38 degrees), a 30-inch projection system, floating bedside tables, 20-liter embedded wall cabinets, and an 11.5-inch vanity mirror combine to form a complete mobile living space.

It is easy to reduce these features to labels like 'ultimate camping rig' or 'camper van,' but Skynomad’s ambitions extend far beyond weekend outings. From parent-child tea breaks — with swiveling front seats, a flat-floor table, and a post-meal rest mode — to family play zones, massive storage configurations, and a 'first-class' mode with the second row pushed back, the vehicle presets more than a dozen scenarios switchable with a single tap. The Xiao AI voice assistant controls 95% of vehicle functions and supports intelligent spatial orchestration; a simple command to 'look at the stars' triggers a coordinated response from the seats, lighting, and climate control to activate stargazing mode.

This is the complete expression of the Skynomad spatial logic: it is not about stacking more features into a car, but about building a spatial operating system that adapts to the scenario. Users are not buying a vehicle with a fixed configuration, but a mobile carrier capable of adapting to school runs, weekend camping, long-distance travel, business meetings, or power naps.

How the Skynomad Effect Will Reshape the Market

What impact will the Skynomad’s entry have on the competitive landscape of the mid-to-large SUV market?

First and most directly, it will force a reconstruction of the pricing structure.

Before the Skynomad arrived, the market for mid-size and large EREV SUVs had clear stratification: flagship products above 400,000 yuan, mid-high-end offerings around 300,000 yuan, and entry-level models between 150,000 and 250,000 yuan. The price bands were relatively distinct, with limited crossover competition.

With a range of 209,900 to 299,900 yuan, the Skynomad straddles the upper end of the entry segment and the heart of the mid-high-end category. Given its overall product strength, Xiaomi is effectively delivering a tier-above product at a tier-below price. This strategy of asymmetric competition will compel every player with large SUVs in the 200,000 to 350,000 yuan bracket to rethink their pricing logic.

A more profound impact lies in the shift of power over product definition. In recent years, the evolution of large SUVs has been dictated by market leaders: big screens, refrigerators, zero-gravity seats, air suspension, and advanced ADAS. These became 'standard' features as the industry followed the top brands. If the market embraces the Skynomad’s concepts of intelligent, transformable space and a mobile Loft, it could trigger a new wave of imitation, much like the six-seat EREV SUV trend did years ago.

And once the industry begins competing on spatial versatility, the Skynomad — leveraging the first-mover advantage of the Kunlun platform — will establish a structural barrier that rivals will struggle to surmount in the short term.

From a product matrix perspective, the Skynomad fills a crucial gap in Xiaomi’s SUV lineup. The YU7 covers the pure electric SUV segment, while the Skynomad carves out a new niche with extended-range power. Together with the SU7 sedan, Xiaomi now boasts a comprehensive camp spanning sedans to SUVs, pure electric to EREV, and mid-size to large vehicles.

Having already crossed the threshold of 800,000 cumulative deliveries, the addition of the Skynomad gives Xiaomi multiple distinct products in the 200,000 to 300,000 yuan price band — the core battleground of the Chinese auto market. That spells sustained pressure for every competitor in this segment.

Yet the challenges facing the Skynomad are equally real.

The sustained contraction of the EREV market is a structural issue. While the Skynomad’s initial sales heat is staggering, the real test will be maintaining stable monthly volumes once the hype fades. Furthermore, while the Explorer edition has created a new 'Loft' category, its target audience is niche. Whether it can cross over from niche to mass market depends on how quickly and deeply users embrace the concept of the car as a living space.

Another subtle but critical variable is the Skynomad’s impact on Xiaomi’s brand perception. The SU7 and YU7 have established an image of 'high performance, high style, and high value' for Xiaomi EV. But for family buyers, those tags may carry less weight. The Skynomad marks Xiaomi’s entry into family-use scenarios, requiring the company to tell its brand story to a new demographic — one that may not care about 0-100 km/h acceleration or drag coefficients, but does care about whether the second row keeps grandparents and children comfortable, or if the trunk holds the family luggage. How the Skynomad performs in these scenarios will determine whether Xiaomi can make the leap from 'the young person’s first EV' to 'the family’s first smart space'.

The Skynomad’s 'space as product' philosophy offers exactly that. It may not solve the structural contraction of the EREV market, but it is fundamentally reshaping consumer expectations about what a large SUV should be and what it should cost.

And that shift in expectations could have ramifications far deeper than the success or failure of a single model.
