XPENG G9L opens pre-sales at 259,800 yuan with BEV, REEV options

Gasgoo Munich- On August 11, XPENG unveiled the G9L and opened pre-sales for the large five-seat SUV at 259,800 yuan.

Offered with both battery-electric and extended-range powertrains, the G9L shares its core technical architecture with the larger six-seat GX and is intended for markets beyond China.

The lineup spans four equipment levels—Max, Ultra SE, Ultra and Ultra Flagship—and six powertrain configurations. These comprise the 702-km rear-wheel-drive BEV Max, 660-km all-wheel-drive BEV Ultra SE, 1,602-km all-wheel-drive EREV Ultra SE, 660-km all-wheel-drive BEV Ultra, 755-km all-wheel-drive BEV Ultra Flagship and 1,602-km all-wheel-drive EREV Ultra Flagship.

The numbers in the variant names refer to the respective CLTC-rated electric or combined driving range, depending on the powertrain.

A design team led by former Ferrari designer JuanMa gave the G9L a fastback-inspired profile, complemented by a slim floating rear spoiler and available 22-inch wheels with staggered-width tires.

The SUV measures 5,120 mm long, 1,999 mm wide and 1,782 mm tall, with a 3,100-mm wheelbase. Its proportions place it above the existing G9 in size and provide the basis for a more spacious five-seat cabin.

Million-pixel digital projection headlights allow the G9L to display symbols on the road while driving, providing visual information to pedestrians and nearby vehicles. When stationary, the system can produce a 98-inch projection image accompanied by two exterior speakers.

The headlight units also incorporate adaptive driving beams linked to XPENG's second-generation Vision-Language-Action, or VLA, system. XPENG claims the system can detect relevant objects from as far as 600 meters away and selectively shade portions of the high beam to reduce glare for other road users.

Other exterior features include four powered doors, deployable side steps, a welcome mode and 360-degree exterior voice interaction. These functions can coordinate automatic unlocking, voice-controlled door operation, side-step deployment and a 1.4-square-meter welcome-light projection.

Five exterior colors are available: Tuscany Green, Provence Purple, Polar Night Black, Everest White and Fjord Gray.

Customers can choose from four interior themes—Sahara Orange, Bordeaux Red, Dawn White and Meteorite Black—giving the cabin a choice of warmer, more formal or understated treatments.

XPENG is introducing what it describes as the automotive industry's first AI-powered adaptive seat system covering a broad range of body types. Sensors assess the occupant's physique and seating posture, after which the backrest and cushion automatically alter their contours to improve support.

The company says the system can accommodate 98% of body types worldwide, although the claim has not been independently verified.

The front passenger receives a zero-gravity seat with 24-way power adjustment. Its integrated safety system combines dual-pretensioner, load-limiting seat belts with an anti-submarining cushion airbag, allowing the seat to offer a reclined position while maintaining occupant restraint.

The 3,100-mm wheelbase supports a five-seat layout designed around passenger space rather than a third row. The front and rear seats can be converted into a bed at the press of a button without removing the front head restraints, while the zero-gravity seats in both rows can recline simultaneously.

XPENG quotes total rear cargo capacity of 1,152 liters, including a 230-liter compartment beneath the load floor. The company says the vehicle can carry 14 20-inch suitcases while accommodating five occupants.

The G9L uses front and rear integrated castings produced with 16,000-tonne machinery. XPENG quotes body torsional rigidity of 56,000 Nm per degree, while 11 airbags provide occupant protection throughout the cabin.

XPENG's vehicle-stability suite is designed to support operation through water as deep as 700 mm, automated emergency steering at speeds of up to 130 km/h and vehicle stabilization following a tire failure at up to 180 km/h. These capabilities are subject to defined system and operating conditions and should not be interpreted as guarantees of safe operation in every emergency.

A driver-incapacitation function can bring the vehicle to the roadside and contact emergency services if the driver becomes unresponsive. Redundant systems are also built into braking, propulsion, emergency communications and door unlocking.

Rear-wheel steer-by-wire is standard across the lineup. With up to 15 degrees of rear-wheel steering, the system gives the 5.1-meter SUV a claimed minimum turning radius of 5.4 meters.

The added maneuverability is intended to allow a single-turn U-turn on a typical two-way, single-lane road and make the G9L easier to handle in parking structures and confined urban streets.

XPENG is offering both battery-electric and extended-range versions to address two distinct use cases: routine urban travel powered primarily by electricity and longer journeys where charging availability may be less predictable.

Both powertrain families are based on the company's SEPA 3.0 architecture.

The G9L uses a 5C fast-charging battery that can add as much as 450 km of CLTC-rated range in nine minutes under suitable charging conditions, according to XPENG.

BEV versions offer up to 755 km of CLTC range. The REEV model provides as much as 435 km of battery-only range and 1,602 km of combined CLTC range, while its combustion engine is compatible with 92-octane gasoline.

The all-wheel-drive BEV accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in a claimed 4.45 seconds, compared with 4.95 seconds for the all-wheel-drive REEV. Actual range and charging performance will vary with temperature, driving conditions, vehicle configuration and charger output.

The G9L will introduce an upgraded version of XPENG's second-generation VLA driver-assistance model. The forthcoming version 6.3.0 increases the parameter count of the onboard model by 3.5 times and, according to XPENG, improves perception responsiveness by 300%.

The company says the larger model will also improve trajectory prediction, decision-making and adaptability across different vehicle platforms and countries.

These remain driver-assistance functions. References to the "L4 era" describe XPENG's longer-term development direction rather than the G9L's currently approved level of driving automation.

Version 6.3.0 will combine the VLA driving model with a Vision-Language Model, or VLM, to integrate vehicle control more closely with cockpit interaction.

Planned functions include initiating a journey from a stationary position, pulling over at the roadside and searching for a parking space within a defined campus or parking area. The VLM will also interpret less precise spoken requests, such as asking the vehicle to navigate toward a general destination, pull over or use a nearby parking space.

XPENG describes some of these functions as drawing on experience developed for its L4 Robotaxi program. Their inclusion does not make the production G9L an L4 vehicle: the driver must remain attentive, monitor the road and retain responsibility for operating the vehicle.
