WeRide launches GENESIS simulation platform to accelerate global autonomous driving development

Gasgoo Munich- On January 28, autonomous driving company WeRide unveiled GENESIS, a self-developed, general-purpose simulation platform designed to support large-scale development and commercialization of autonomous driving systems. By combining physical AI with generative AI technologies, GENESIS bridges real-world physics and virtual simulation, creating a unified environment for training and validation.

As autonomous vehicles move across markets, they must adapt to wide variations in road infrastructure, driving behavior, regulatory frameworks, and climate conditions. WeRide argues that conventional on-road testing struggles to keep pace with these complexities, particularly when it comes to covering rare or extreme scenarios. GENESIS addresses this gap by using generative AI to rapidly create highly realistic urban environments, enabling the simulation of long-tail cases such as severe weather events and complex traffic conflicts within minutes.

The platform is built around a closed-loop architecture powered by four core AI modules, designed to continuously refine autonomous driving algorithms through simulation-driven iteration.

The AI Scenarios module focuses on generating critical driving situations that autonomous vehicles may encounter, ranging from everyday interactions to high-risk edge cases. These include cut-ins by nearby vehicles, unprotected left turns, emergency maneuvers, sudden intrusions by pedestrians or cyclists, natural disasters, road blockages, and extreme weather conditions. Drawing on billions of kilometers of naturalistic driving data, as well as WeRide's extensive archive of long-tail and extreme cases collected over more than eight years of real-world operations, the module aims to ensure robust performance across complex boundary conditions.

Complementing this is the AI Agents module, which models the behavior of various traffic participants with a high degree of realism. By simulating a full spectrum of interactions—from routine driving to high-risk confrontations—it enhances the robustness of decision-making within complex operational design domains.

Performance evaluation is handled by the AI Metrics module, which translates driving behavior into quantifiable indicators across dimensions such as safety, regulatory compliance, ride comfort, and operational efficiency. This allows algorithm updates to be assessed objectively, based on comparable and data-driven benchmarks.

The loop is closed by the AI Diagnosis module, which automates root-cause analysis and remediation. It identifies suboptimal driving behaviors, traces them back to underlying issues, and generates actionable recommendations for improvement.

Together, this architecture supports a wide range of vehicle platforms, from advanced driver assistance systems to fully autonomous Level 4 vehicles, while remaining adaptable to diverse road features and sensor setups worldwide. WeRide positions GENESIS as a "one platform, global training" solution, reducing the need for market-specific redevelopment and improving the efficiency of R&D resource allocation.

By integrating the four AI modules, GENESIS establishes a fully automated feedback loop—generating realistic scenarios, quantifying performance bottlenecks, pinpointing system weaknesses, and suggesting optimization paths. According to the company, this approach can compress millions of kilometers of physical testing into just days of virtual simulation, creating what it describes as an acceleration flywheel for continuous autonomous driving improvement.

WeRide currently operates autonomous driving services in more than 40 cities across 11 countries and holds autonomous driving permits in eight markets. The launch of GENESIS strengthens the company's competitive position in simulation technology, AI agent modeling, and closed-loop optimization, positioning the platform as a core piece of infrastructure to support the global scaling of autonomous driving.
