Gasgoo.com (Shanghai May 6) - Guangqi Fiat is looking to further expand its model lineup in the future, National Business Daily reported, quoting a comment made by joint venture General Manager Yan Jianming at last week's Beijing International Automotive Exhibition. "As a new joint venture brand, Guangqi Fiat will help GAC Group improve its independent research and development ability," Mr. Yan commented. Guangqi Fiat seems to be following the example of other Chinese manufacturers, which have used their joint ventures with foreign companies to gradually boost their own R&D ability.
The Fiat Viaggio compact (pictured), which made its debut at the Beijing show, is the JV's first ever Chinese-made model. According to Mr. Yan, the Viaggio, which is based on the Dodge Dart and designed by Fiat Group Style Centre, was made specifically with Chinese driver demands in mind. Additionally, the Viaggio's Alfa-Romeo platform will be used for upcoming hatchback and SUV models, Mr. Yan said. He added that Guangqi Fiat platforms may even be used for Chrysler models in the future.
Production of the Viaggio is expected to begin this June, with the car's market debut scheduled between August and September.
"According to our plans, Guangqi Fiat will be active in the compact, midsize and luxury vehicle segments," Mr. Yan commented, adding that the JV will introduce at least one new model per year. According to Mr. Yan, improved R&D capability and a better grasp on technology will play an increasingly important role in satisfying the demands of Chinese automobile buyers in the future.
Guangqi Fiat is also planning to reform its sales network in the country. The JV currently possesses 51 dealerships nationwide, and is planning to increase that number to over 100 by the end of the year.
