Gasgoo Munich- On September 28, SAIC Volkswagen announced that the first batch of Lamando L sedans bound for Mexico has rolled off the assembly line and begun shipping. This marks the company's first entry into the North American market, expanding its export footprint beyond Southeast and Central Asia to reach Mexico.

Notably, the Lamando L was long developed and sold primarily for the Chinese market. When the model launched in 2022, local Mexican media still dubbed it a "China-exclusive" vehicle. Following the reveal of its 2025 mid-cycle refresh, speculation had already begun about a potential debut in Mexico. This official export signals a shift for this localized product as it moves beyond China's borders.
The Lamando L currently available in China offers two powertrain options: a 1.5T and a 2.0T engine. The GTS variant features the EA888 2.0T engine delivering a maximum output of 162 kW, while the 1.5T model is equipped with the EA211 1.5T EVO II engine. However, SAIC Volkswagen has not yet disclosed specific specifications, pricing, or sales targets for the Mexican version.

Mexico represents a substantial automotive market where sedans still command a significant share. Data from Mexico's National Institute of Statistics and Geography shows light vehicle sales reached 129,400 units in August 2026, up roughly 2.2% year-on-year, with the Volkswagen brand accounting for about 11,800 units that month. During the same period, sales of small cars topped 28,000 units, while compact models exceeded 19,000 — providing a solid market foundation for fuel-powered sedans like the Lamando L.
Previously, SAIC Volkswagen had already exported vehicles to Southeast Asian markets like the Philippines and Vietnam, and earlier this year expanded into Uzbekistan. In June, models including the Tiguan L Pro, Passat Pro, and Teramont Pro arrived in Uzbekistan, marking a new phase in Volkswagen China's efforts to export domestically developed models to overseas markets.
Looking ahead, SAIC Volkswagen plans to extend its export lineup from internal combustion engines to new energy vehicles. The company revealed that models like the ID. ERA 9X will also be shipped overseas. For a joint venture that has deep roots in the Chinese market for over four decades, the Lamando L's entry into Mexico represents more than just adding a destination — it signals that "developed in China, made in China, for the world" is becoming a new driving force for its business.
