Schaeffler Launches Next-Generation Vehicle Zone Controller Platform

Edited by Sia From Gasgoo

Gasgoo Munich-Schaeffler has rolled out a next-generation vehicle zone controller platform, aiming to deliver products and services with stronger performance, better cost efficiency, and broader application for complete vehicles.

As automotive electrical and electronic (E/E) architectures evolve, the first major shift is the centralization of control logic.

In traditional distributed setups, functions like body control, lighting, door locks, and seats are managed by numerous independent electronic control units (ECUs). This approach results in complex architectures, an overabundance of components, and cumbersome wiring harnesses.

Schaeffler’s Zone Controller Basic consolidates these dispersed functions by region. Leveraging the company’s expertise in drivetrain systems, it goes a step further by integrating powertrain and chassis controls across domains.

The basic platform has already secured design wins from multiple automakers.

For mid-to-high-end models demanding greater computing power, higher bandwidth, lower latency, and robust real-time control, Schaeffler developed the Zone Controller Performance edition. This version focuses heavily on boosting computing and communication capabilities.

Through deep collaboration with leading chipmakers like NXP and Infineon, Schaeffler has built a mature platform based on MCUs such as the NXP S32K5 and Infineon TC4 series. This setup allows for rapid hardware and software development that meets mass-production standards.

Furthermore, building on its strategic investment in 48V low-voltage networks, Schaeffler has developed a 48V Zone Controller that supports architectures including star and backbone network power distribution.

The global footprint of the automotive industry dictates that zone controller platforms must not only satisfy local market demands but also possess the agility to adapt quickly for overseas markets.

Drawing on a deep understanding of the Chinese market, Schaeffler’s platform incorporates localized solutions for chips, structural materials, and connectors. It offers a full suite of localized engineering services, ranging from function definition and joint development to sample validation and mass-production launch.

At the same time, as Chinese automakers accelerate their global expansion, the platform must be capable of supporting overseas markets in parallel.

Leveraging its global R&D and manufacturing network, Schaeffler can rapidly respond to local development needs in China while efficiently supporting international expansion. This helps automakers achieve global adaptation for their platform products. Whether adapting Chinese models for export or developing new vehicles specifically for overseas markets, Schaeffler supports the process through a unified global platform and cross-regional engineering collaboration. This approach reduces development complexity and supply chain risks, safeguarding the global expansion of Chinese automakers.
