According to Gasgoo Data, passenger car registrations in Spain reached 93,858 units in September 2026, up 10.2% year-on-year (up 36.9% month-on-month). Chinese brands posted a total of 16,496 registrations, lifting their market share by 7.4 percentage points year-on-year to 17.6%.

BYD topped Chinese brands with 4,434 registrations, ranking sixth overall (up 81.9% year-on-year), followed by OMODA & JAECOO (4,010 units, up 91.6% year-on-year). Tesla Model 3 (2,528 units) became the best-selling model overall, while Spain's BEV and PHEV penetration surged to 34.0% (up 6.3 percentage points month-on-month), with BEVs emerging as the strongest growth driver.
Brand landscape
Toyota (9,172 units) led the market, followed by Renault (5,551 units), Volkswagen (5,113 units), SEAT (4,831 units) and Kia (4,540 units); BYD broke into sixth place, with OMODA & JAECOO ranking eighth, giving Chinese brands a significantly stronger presence.
Electrificatio
BEV and PHEV penetration reached 34.0% (BEV 18.5%, PHEV 15.5%, HEV+MHEV 43.7%, ICE 22.3%), with hybrids still dominant but BEVs accelerating. Tesla Model 3 led the BEV market, BYD held sixth place overall on the strength of its dual BEV/PHEV lineup, and Chinese brands steadily gained share driven by their BEV and PHEV strengths.
Chinese Automaker Dynamics
BYD: 4,434 registrations, No. 1 among Chinese brands and sixth overall, holding a top-tier position with a dual BEV/PHEV lineup.
OMODA & JAECOO: 4,010 registrations, up 91.6% year-on-year — the fastest-growing brand among the top ten, spanning ICE, hybrid and BEV powertrains.
MG: Down 9.5% year-on-year under pressure from the electrification transition; its mainstay ZS model still ranked among the top ten models.
Deepal: A new player in Spain, firmly in the second tier of Chinese brands; the S05 posted 776 registrations this month.
Leapmotor: The B03X BEV SUV recorded 231 units this month, rounding out an increasingly complete product matrix.
Geely: E2 officially went on sale in September and recorded 371 registrations this month, with the BEV small car precisely targeting the local market.
Strategic Outlook
Spain's BEV and PHEV penetration broke through 34%, with BEVs (18.5%) emerging as the core growth driver. Tesla Model 3's top finish underscores the accelerating shift to electric mobility, yet HEV+MHEV (43.7%) remains dominant. BYD's 81.9% year-on-year jump and OMODA & JAECOO's 91.6% growth demonstrate that the "PHEV/BEV dual-line + high-value SUV" formula is emerging as a breakthrough strategy against Japanese and local incumbents. In this hybrid transition period, BYD's PHEV strength and OMODA & JAECOO's multi-powertrain matrix precisely match Spanish market demand; going forward, the focus should shift from "share expansion" to "deep electrification" — leveraging BEV and PHEV as dual engines to convert the 17.6% share into a mainstream presence and build a long-term foundation amid tariff and policy dynamics.
