The business up for sale provides short- and long-term "free-floating" car-sharing services, allowing users to book vehicles around the clock via a dedicated mobile app. Operating one of the most geographically extensive platforms in the sector, its fleet spans 14 cities across Europe and the United States.

The divestiture is part of Stellantis’s "FaSTLAne 2030 strategic plan," which aims to sharpen capital allocation. By funneling investment and resources into core automotive regions, brands, and technologies, the company intends to maximize returns.

"By sharpening our focus on the core automotive business, we are strengthening our ability to create long-term value," said Virgilio Cerutti, Stellantis’s Head of Business Development and Partnerships. "We will work closely with all stakeholders to ensure a smooth transition for our customers, partners, and employees."

For Mutares, the acquisition establishes a new platform in the mobility sector. Johannes Laumann, Chief Investment Officer at Mutares, noted that Free2move boasts strong international brand recognition. Operating as an independent entity will allow it to leverage greater agility and targeted investment, unlocking growth potential in a fiercely competitive market.

Mutares plans to overhaul Free2move’s international fleet management, accelerating the transition to fully electric vehicles. The firm also intends to renew its focus on customer experience and addressing urban mobility needs for municipalities.

Stellantis emphasized that prioritizing continuity for customers, partners, and employees remains paramount throughout the transaction. While the divestiture aligns with the automaker’s strategic focus, Free2move’s car-sharing operations stand to gain fresh opportunities for independent growth under new ownership.
