WeRide Secures Spain's First Level 4 Autonomous Passenger Vehicle Operation License

Gasgoo Munich- On September 10, WeRide, Uber, and AVOMO jointly announced they have secured Spain's first Level 4 autonomous passenger vehicle operation license from the Directorate General of Traffic (DGT). The authorization clears the way for vehicle deployment, laying the groundwork for future commercial operations under the ES-AV framework.

This marks the first national-level autonomous license for WeRide's Robotaxi GXR within the European Union. Under the agreement, initial deployment testing will kick off first. In the opening phase, dozens of Robotaxi GXR units equipped with WeRide's latest autonomous driving technology will hit the road across high-demand areas of Madrid, each with a safety operator behind the wheel.

Once preparations are complete and regulatory requirements met, WeRide will partner with Uber and AVOMO to launch commercial Robotaxi services to the public in 2026. Madrid residents will then be able to hail a WeRide Robotaxi directly through the Uber app. As key operational milestones are reached, the trio plans to expand the service area, aiming for fully driverless commercial operations across Madrid's core districts.

Madrid is the fourth city in WeRide and Uber's strategic roadmap and the first location for their commercial Robotaxi rollout in Europe. The partners plan to expand their collaboration to 15 cities globally by 2030, deploying tens of thousands of Robotaxis.

Previously, the partners announced in June 2026 that they would launch Madrid's first commercial Robotaxi service. That same month, Zurich became their second European city, with public operations also set to go live in 2026.

The project continues WeRide's "light-asset" global expansion model, integrating the company's autonomous driving technology with Uber's global mobility platform and AVOMO's fleet management capabilities. This creates a replicable commercial path for scaling Robotaxi services in high-value markets worldwide.

To date, WeRide has secured autonomous driving licenses in nine countries: China, Spain, Switzerland, Belgium, France, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and the United States.
