The project centers on electronic materials. It aims to supply upstream components for China's semiconductor sector through local manufacturing, technology transfer, and customer collaboration. The investment also advances BASF's "local production for local market" strategy. This bolsters supply-chain resilience while sharpening responsiveness to domestic clients.

The new facility is slated to come online by late 2028. Beyond manufacturing, the site will serve as a hub for BASF. It will deepen ties with players across the semiconductor value chain. It will leverage local expertise and collaboration to drive chip-related technology deployment and iteration.

The investment builds on BASF's existing operations in Nanjing. The new site will create synergies with current capacity. It tightens the company's production, supply-chain, and technical-support network across eastern China. It also aligns its footprint more closely with domestic demand.

Industry-wide, China's semiconductor sector has been scaling up steadily. Expanding capacity in wafer fabrication and packaging drives up demand for localized upstream electronic materials. BASF's latest capacity push in Nanjing answers that shifting demand. It also reflects a broader bet: producing closer to end-users. This shores up supply stability and curbs cross-border logistics volatility.

For BASF, a major global chemical maker, the ongoing expansion of electronic-materials capacity in China underscores the sheer scale of domestic demand for high-end electronic chemicals. As the project takes shape, the Nanjing plant's actual output and customer traction will be worth watching.
