Gasgoo Munich-Speculation over whether the Beijing and Shanghai auto shows would go head-to-head in the same year has been put to rest.
The Shanghai Council for the Promotion of International Trade and the Automotive Sub-council of the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade (CCPIT) recently clarified the schedule for the two major exhibitions. Following a special coordination meeting on September 3, both sides agreed to maintain the status quo: Beijing hosts the comprehensive auto show in April of even years, while Shanghai takes the April slot in odd years. However, the 2027 Beijing show, slated for March, will debut as a specialized themed exhibition.

The arrangement effectively ends the market debate over whether the Beijing auto show would shift to an annual schedule and clash directly with its Shanghai counterpart. Back in June, the official Beijing website listed the 2027 event for March 27 to April 5, while the 2027 Shanghai show locked in its media days for April 23-24. With less than a month separating the two, the industry raised concerns about rising exhibitor costs, resource strain, and the risk of homogenization.
Under the latest coordination, the 2027 Beijing exhibition will no longer vie with Shanghai as a comprehensive auto show. Instead, it will seek a differentiated position as a specialized themed event. The traditional rotation mechanism between the two major comprehensive shows remains intact.

For automakers, the adjustment eases some of the pressure on marketing, staffing, and new product launches that would have come from back-to-back comprehensive shows. Yet, details remain sparse: the specific focus, scale, and exhibitor lineup for the 2027 Beijing specialized exhibition have yet to be announced.
As the number of industry events swells and automakers tighten their marketing budgets to focus on ROI, how Beijing and Shanghai differentiate themselves while maintaining international clout will be the critical story in the next phase of exhibition planning.
