Gasgoo Munich- During his visit to China with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz on February 25, BMW Group Chairman Oliver Zipse officially signed a memorandum of understanding with Chinese battery giant CATL. Zipse emphasized that open cooperation and innovation are crucial for industrial development. China remains at the heart of BMW's global strategy, with the company committed to the philosophy of "In China, For China, and Advancing with China."

To date, BMW has invested over 120 billion yuan in its production base in Shenyang and established four major R&D and innovation centers, as well as three software companies, building a comprehensive localized R&D, manufacturing, and supply system in China.

The signing of the agreement also marks an important milestone in BMW's localization efforts in China. The company's first China-made Neue Klasse model, the BMW iX3 Long Wheelbase, will make its global debut at the Auto China 2026. Built on the new-generation BEV-dedicated architecture, the vehicle is optimized for Chinese consumers, enhancing both space and driving comfort, and is seen as a key product in BMW's electrification strategy.

As early as December 2024, CATL had announced that it would begin supplying cylindrical batteries for BMW's Neue Klasse battery electric vehicles in both global and Chinese markets starting in 2026. The signing of the memorandum further solidifies the partnership between the two companies in battery technology, low-carbon supply chains, and the mass production of electric vehicles, ensuring a stable foundation for the rollout of BMW's new-generation models.

Looking ahead, BMW plans to deepen its electrification efforts in China, leveraging its long-term strategic partnership with CATL to accelerate the adoption of low-carbon technologies and electric products. This localized innovation will contribute to global sustainability goals, injecting new energy into China's high-end new energy vehicle market.
