Gasgoo Munich- BMW Group announced on August 27 that it has delivered 2 million pure electric vehicles (BEVs) to customers worldwide since the first i3 hit the market in late 2013. Including plug-in hybrids, the automaker has handed over roughly 3.5 million electrified vehicles globally over the same period.

The milestone 2 millionth car was an i5 M60 xDrive, built at the company's Dingolfing plant in Germany and delivered to a customer in Spain this month. Separately, BMW's Munich plant kicked off mass production of the new i3 in August.

Europe stood out as a particularly strong market. In the second quarter, boosted by increased availability of the iX3, BMW's pure EV sales in the region jumped 38% from a year earlier to 81,445 units. For the first half of the year, fully electric models made up roughly 28% of the group's total European sales. Since the iX3's global debut, the model has claimed one in every three battery-powered BMW orders in the region — and within the X3 family, the all-electric iX3 now accounts for half of all orders.

"Delivering 2 million pure electric vehicles proves the global appeal of our BMW and MINI models," said Jochen Goller, member of the Board of Management for Customer, Brand and Sales. "In Europe, the momentum since the iX3 launch remains strong, and we are closing in on 100,000 new orders. This underscores the significance of the New Class platform for our ongoing electric transformation."

The company said its extensive lineup of battery-electric and plug-in hybrid models positions it well to meet rising customer demand.
