BYD Great Han Arrives: D-Class Sedan, Directly Challenging BBA in the 300,000 Yuan Class

Edited by Taylor From Gasgoo

Gasgoo Munich-On June 8, Lu Tian, general manager of BYD's Dynasty Network, released official photos of the brand's new D-class flagship sedan, the Great Han. Internally codenamed "Series 9," this new model is the first in the Dynasty lineup to target the D-class luxury market.

The Great Han's rollout from the January announcement to the June reveal has been brisk and clear. This time, the Dynasty Network is introducing more than just another new car; it is making a key move in BYD's push into the mainstream luxury sedan market.

Why Launch the Great Han

BYD needs a flagship sedan. This demand is not a sudden whim from the product department, but an inevitable choice for the brand's current stage of development.

In terms of sales structure, the combined sales of BYD's Dynasty and Ocean networks totaled 330,215 units in May 2026. Relying on core models like the Qin, Song, and Yuan, the firm firmly dominates the 100,000 to 200,000 yuan new-energy family market.

However, above the 300,000 yuan price point, consumer recognition of BYD remains relatively limited. Denza brand sales were 16,303 units in May 2026, still some distance from fully representing the high-end segment. In the 300,000 to 400,000 yuan luxury sedan market, BYD has long lacked a core product capable of direct competition.

In 2026, BYD released nine new models to penetrate the high-end market, signaling a clear transition from "selling volume" to "selling value." The Great Han and the full-size SUV "Great Tang" together form the "Dynasty Series 9" flagship lineup, tasked with filling the void for new-energy sedans priced above 300,000 yuan.

Another frequently cited background factor is the window of opportunity in the external market. Audi has officially confirmed that the successor to the current A8L will not launch until 2029 at the earliest, meaning Audi will face a complete vacuum in the domestic D-class executive sedan segment from 2026 to 2029.

As traditional luxury internal-combustion D-class cars collectively withdraw, most domestic flagship sedans in the new-energy market lean toward sporty tuning, leaving a shortage of conventional, executive-oriented D-class products. The Great Han steps into this gap with an executive positioning—boasting a length of over 5.3 meters and a wheelbase exceeding 3.1 meters.

Thus, the Great Han's value rests on two points. Internally, it plugs the product gap for the Dynasty Network's flagship sedan, forming a high-end dual-flagship matrix with the Great Tang. Externally, it secures a position during the market window left by retreating traditional luxury brands and the absence of new-energy D-class executive cars.

This dictates its mission is positioning rather than volume—redefining BYD's presence in the luxury sedan market.

How Does the BYD Great Han Stack Up?

In terms of design, the Great Han adopts a new generation of the "Dragon Face" family language. The front maintains a low stance, with slim headlights connected by a continuous light bar and narrow air intakes on both sides—creating an overall look that is stable yet full of dynamic tension.

The side profile features a fastback roofline and a tapered waist, accented by hidden door handles and black sport wheels. The rear takes a minimalist, wide-body approach, with taillights expected to feature a continuous light strip design.

Options include two-tone paint and large body-colored brake calipers. Overall length is expected to approach 5.3 meters, with a wheelbase surpassing 3.1 meters—dimensions that directly target the Audi A8L long-wheelbase version and the Mercedes-Benz S-Class.

Regarding powertrains, the Great Han offers both plug-in hybrid and pure electric versions, equipped with the second-generation Blade Battery and flash-charging technology. The pure electric version comes in two configurations: an 800-km four-wheel-drive LiDAR flagship model, and a 1,008-km rear-wheel-drive LiDAR premium model.

Regarding pricing, combining the Great Tang's pre-sale range (250,000 to 320,000 yuan), the Great Han will likely be priced in the 300,000 yuan bracket, directly targeting the NIO ET7, Stelato S9, and models from traditional German luxury brands.

For intelligent driving, official indications suggest the Great Han will carry the "DiPilot" B LiDAR version and the "DiPilot" 5.0 solution. Based on a reinforcement-learning end-to-end large model, the system promises a driving experience closer to human logic. A roof-mounted LiDAR provides the core hardware support for high-level driver assistance.

In terms of chassis and configuration, the Great Han will feature the DiSus intelligent body control system and rear-wheel steering. The inclusion of DiSus means the chassis can actively adjust suspension stiffness and body attitude, while rear-wheel steering improves agility for a D-class long-wheelbase sedan in urban environments.

These technologies previously appeared mostly in high-end models from Yangwang and Denza; their migration to the Dynasty series confirms the Great Han's high-specification positioning.

Regarding the name: "Great Han" wasn't a direct executive decision but emerged from a public naming campaign. Among the six finalists—"Great Han," "Han 9," "Han Ultra," "Han World," "Xiaohan," and "Han Red Hare"—"Great Han" led the vote and was ultimately selected.

This process reflects BYD's intent to boost brand intimacy through user engagement when launching high-end products. Meanwhile, the core "Han" IP, after years of development, already holds significant recognition.

Overall, the Great Han offers substantial technological capabilities: 1,000-km class range, full-stack high-end intelligent driving, DiSus intelligent chassis, and dual powertrain options.

Whether these specs can generate enough appeal in the 300,000 yuan market will ultimately depend on the build quality and comprehensive driving experience of the production car. However, one thing is clear: the arrival of the Great Han signals that BYD's Dynasty series has officially entered the competitive arena of D-class luxury sedans.
