Gasgoo Munich- On February 25 in Beijing, BMW Group and CATL signed a memorandum of understanding to deepen cooperation on cross-border battery passport data trials and coordinated carbon reduction across their supply chains. The agreement highlights the growing importance of digital traceability and emissions transparency in the global electric vehicle battery ecosystem.

The signing coincided with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz's visit to China alongside a delegation of German business leaders. Against that diplomatic backdrop, the initiative is intended to facilitate compliant and seamless battery data flows while advancing joint decarbonization efforts throughout the value chain, reinforcing Sino-German collaboration in sustainable manufacturing.
Under the memorandum, BMW and CATL will explore real-world applications of battery passport systems to strengthen digital management and data exchange across global supply networks. The partners aim to enhance their ability to respond to evolving regulatory requirements worldwide, while promoting low-carbon product development and contributing to the broader adoption of standardized battery information and data frameworks. As regulators in major markets tighten lifecycle carbon reporting rules, such initiatives are increasingly viewed as critical to maintaining market access.
The two companies' partnership dates back to 2012 and has spanned battery production, joint research and technological innovation. Over more than a decade of collaboration, CATL has become one of BMW's key battery suppliers.
Looking ahead, CATL signaled it will continue to pursue open collaboration with global partners, leveraging technological advances to accelerate the green transition and shape a more sustainable future for the automotive industry.
