CATL Signs Agreement with BMW to Jointly Promote Battery Passport Pilot

Edited by Betty From Gasgoo

Gasgoo Munich- CATL announced on the morning of Feb 27 that it signed a memorandum of understanding with the BMW Group in Beijing on Feb 25. The partnership will focus on deep collaboration in two key areas: cross-border data pilots for battery passports and coordinated carbon reduction across the supply chain. The signing comes as German Chancellor Merz leads a delegation of business leaders to China, marking a significant industrial agreement reached during the Chinese-German Chancellors' meeting.

Under the terms of the memorandum, the two companies will explore scenario-based applications for battery passports. The goal is to elevate digital management and data exchange within the global power battery supply chain, strengthening their ability to navigate international regulations jointly. At the same time, they aim to build a compliant, seamless data infrastructure for power batteries. By coordinating across the entire supply chain, the partners hope to meet decarbonization targets, foster low-carbon product development, and drive the adoption of global standards for battery information and data.

Strategic cooperation between CATL and the BMW Group dates back to 2012. Over more than a decade, the two have collaborated on battery production, joint R&D, and technological innovation, building a solid foundation. This new agreement expands that existing framework, extending their partnership into the digital and green management of power batteries across their entire lifecycle.

Digital tracing and carbon footprint management have emerged as critical priorities for the new energy vehicle industry. Consequently, the battery passport—which ensures battery information is traceable and carbon emissions are calculable—has become a focal point for industry exploration. This partnership between CATL and BMW will drive collaborative efforts in sustainable development across the power battery supply chain.

Looking ahead, CATL and the BMW Group will continue to implement these initiatives. Leveraging technological innovation and supply chain synergy, they aim to advance the green and digital transformation of the power battery sector, supporting the broader sustainable development of the global automotive industry.
