Chinese automaker Chery Automobile Co. started construction on a production base in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region on Monday, the state-run Xinhua News Agency reported Tuesday, citing Chery spokesman Jin Yibo.
Chery, China's largest independent auto maker by sales volume, and unnamed partners will invest CNY20 billion in the project in the Ordos region by the end of 2015, the report said.
The facility will begin making auto parts before it starts to produce vehicles and its capacity will likely rise to 300,000 vehicles a year, Xinhua reported.
