Chery Visits Baolong's European Manufacturing Center

Edited by Betty From Gasgoo

Gasgoo Munich- On June 8, a delegation of four, led by Qi Shilong, executive vice president of Chery Automobile Co., Ltd., recently visited Baolong's European manufacturing center in Hungary.

The two sides held preliminary discussions on the feasibility of supplying Chery's European plants with products made at Baolong's European campus, including TPMS, sensors, busbars, and air suspension. They also exchanged views on capacity planning and explored compliance requirements in depth.

Shanghai Baolong Automotive Corporation's "Global Layout 2.0" strategy dovetails with Chery's "In Somewhere, For Somewhere, Be Somewhere" global expansion plan. Both sides are eager to build on their solid domestic partnership to accelerate local collaboration in Europe.

Separately, Gasgoo has learned that Nissan recently disclosed it is in advanced talks with Chery to manufacture vehicles at its Sunderland plant in the UK. The companies have signed a non-binding memorandum of understanding under which Chery's UK subsidiary would take over one of the plant's two production lines.

Nissan stated in a release that production would officially kick off at Sunderland in the fiscal year starting April 2027, pending the deal's finalization. While the specific models remain under wraps, industry insiders expect Chery to focus on right-hand-drive vehicles tailored for the UK market.

Since entering the UK market in 2024 with its Jaecoo and Omoda brands, Chery has rapidly gained ground. Data from market research firms shows Chery captured a 6% share in the UK during the first four months of 2026, overtaking Ford, Toyota, and Nissan. Notably, the Jaecoo X7 compact SUV claimed the top spot on the UK passenger car sales chart in March.

Chery and Nissan have a history of production collaboration in Europe and other regions. Chery previously took over Nissan's Barcelona plant in Spain, where it resumed production of the Spanish Ebro brand vehicles through semi-knocked-down (SKD) assembly. Earlier this year, in January, Chery finalized an agreement to acquire Nissan's vehicle assembly plant in Rosslyn, South Africa.
