China Passenger Vehicle Recalls Hit 252,100 Units in July

Gasgoo Munich- In July 2026, the State Administration for Market Regulation's Defect Product Management Center released recall figures showing 10 campaigns involving 252,100 passenger vehicles across seven automakers. That marks a 503.1% surge from June's 41,800 units. By powertrain, brand origin, and defect type, July's recalls were dominated by imported brands, traditional internal combustion engine vehicles—which accounted for 70% of the total—and a concentrated spike in airbag and seatbelt defects.

Airbags and Seatbelts Lead Recall Triggers

Breaking down recalls by assembly, the top three defect areas were airbags and seatbelts, instrument lighting and auxiliary devices, and suspension systems. Airbag and seatbelt issues led to 160,400 units recalled, or 63.63% of the monthly total, making it the largest single category. Instrument and lighting issues accounted for 39,600 units (15.71%), while suspension systems covered 33,500 units (13.29%).

In specific cases, two Jaguar Land Rover entities issued recalls due to micro-movement corrosion in driver airbag connectors. Jaguar Land Rover (Ningbo) Trading Co. recalled 83,800 units, while Jaguar Land Rover (China) Investment Co. recalled 77,300 units. The combined 161,100 units involve abnormal resistance in the steering wheel clockspring-to-airbag circuit, which could illuminate the Supplemental Restraint System warning light or, in extreme cases, prevent airbag deployment. This defect represents 63.9% of the month's total recall volume, aligning closely with the proportion for airbag and seatbelt assemblies.

Suspension system defects were entirely attributed to XPENG. The XPENG X9 faced a recall of 33,473 units produced between August 2023 and August 2025 due to a risk of slow air leakage in the front air spring strut assembly under high-temperature and high-humidity conditions. The manufacturer will replace the front air spring assembly with an improved version free of charge.

Instrument, lighting, and auxiliary device defects affected the GAC Toyota bZ7. Due to a software logic anomaly in the smart Bluetooth module, the system may send erroneous commands to the vehicle control unit under specific conditions, potentially causing the transmission to shift from Drive to Neutral while driving, resulting in power interruption. The recall covers 15,266 units. The manufacturer will fix the issue via an over-the-air (OTA) update, requiring no hardware replacement.

Additionally, hybrid vehicles saw two recalls involving just 100 units, accounting for 0.04% of the total. While these defect types were not listed separately in the major assemblies above, their volume was negligible.

Imports and Traditional Fuel Cars Both Exceed 70% Share

By brand origin, import brands initiated six recalls totaling 178,700 units, or 70.88% of the share. Joint ventures conducted three recalls covering 39,900 units (15.83%), while domestic brands executed one recall involving 33,500 units (13.29%). The dominance of import brands is clear, driven largely by Jaguar Land Rover's concentrated recall action.

By powertrain type, traditional fuel vehicles saw five recalls totaling 177,800 units, or 70.53% of the total. New energy vehicles (NEVs) had seven recalls—two of which also covered fuel models—involving 74,300 units, or 29.47%. Within the NEV segment, pure electric vehicles accounted for five recalls and 74,200 units (29.43%), while hybrid vehicles accounted for two recalls and 100 units (0.04%).

The sharp month-over-month increase in July recalls stems primarily from Jaguar Land Rover's single massive campaign exceeding 160,000 units, compounded by overlapping defects from companies like XPENG and Toyota.

Looking at the first-half trend, cumulative recalls for January through June 2026 reached approximately 1.65 million, a 68.8% year-on-year decline. The July rebound has not altered the overall trend of low annual activity. The dominance of import brands is particularly pronounced in the monthly data. Meanwhile, NEV models presented typical recall cases across both software functionality (Toyota's OTA fix) and hardware craftsmanship (XPENG's air suspension), reflecting distinct risk points in quality validation between new and legacy technology pathways.

For affected vehicle owners, it is advisable to cooperate promptly with manufacturers to complete free repairs and eliminate potential safety hazards. As any product carries a probability of defects, the normalized execution of recall systems serves as a testament to corporate responsibility and a direct reflection of regulatory efficacy.
