Gasgoo Munich- Covestro announced on July 2 the completion of its acquisition of two former Vencorex HDI derivatives plants — one in Rayong, Thailand, and the other in Freeport, Texas. The deal officially closed on July 1. The move broadens Covestro's manufacturing footprint for high-performance polyurethane raw materials and signals a long-term strategic bet on two core markets: Asia-Pacific and North America.

HDI (hexamethylene diisocyanate) derivatives are essential building blocks for high-performance polyurethane coatings, adhesives, and sealants. They see heavy use in demanding applications: automotive OEM and refinish paints, anti-corrosion coatings for infrastructure, marine protective finishes, wood and furniture coatings, electronics casings, and premium industrial topcoats. With environmental regulations tightening and downstream customers demanding greater durability and weather resistance, the market for HDI derivatives continues to gain strength.
The two new plants will dovetail with Covestro's existing HDI derivatives network across Europe, Asia, and North America, unlocking cross-regional capacity synergies and more flexible resource allocation. That integration should bolster the company's supply resilience against market swings while giving customers more tailored product offerings. Covestro also plans to lean on its combined tech and processing strengths to push R&D and scale-up of high-performance, low-solvent, and more sustainable coating and adhesive solutions — underpinning the green transition across downstream industries.
Thomas Roemer, head of Covestro's Coatings and Adhesives division, noted that adding plants in Thailand and the US allows the company to strengthen regional production and improve local supply to customers. "Especially in the current challenging market environment, reliable supply, regional delivery capability, and expert technical support are crucial for our customers," Roemer said. "This acquisition helps us better meet those needs."
