Covestro TPU Application Development Center Opens in Guangzhou

Gasgoo Munich- Covestro announced on May 20 that its new Thermoplastic Polyurethane (TPU) Application Development Center in Guangzhou has officially begun operations. This marks a significant milestone for the company as it deepens its strategic footprint in the Asia-Pacific region and moves closer to key customer markets.

The newly opened Guangzhou facility will complement the Zhuhai plant—Covestro's largest global TPU production base, which launched earlier this year—as well as the existing regional R&D center in Changhua, Taiwan. Together, they form a synergistic network integrating cutting-edge research, application development, and mass production. This layout is designed to significantly accelerate Covestro's response times and enhance service capabilities across the Asia-Pacific region.

Demand for high-performance TPU materials remains robust in the Asia-Pacific region, particularly in South China, driven by fast-growing sectors such as consumer electronics, automotive, specialty films, and industrial components. By facilitating closer local technical collaboration, the Guangzhou hub strengthens Covestro's ability to swiftly translate complex market needs into customized solutions. Equipped with advanced processing simulation lines, the center can replicate real-world production conditions like extrusion and injection molding. This capability enables rapid formula adjustments and material modifications, significantly shortening testing cycles and time-to-market while providing clients with targeted application development support.

A key innovation at the Guangzhou TPU Application Development Center lies in its multi-business synergy. The facility co-locates with Covestro's Engineering Plastics and Specialty Film business units, achieving deep integration of internal capabilities. The Engineering Plastics unit brings its expertise in modification and color technology to support in-house color development for consumer electronics, footwear materials, and paint protection films. Meanwhile, the Specialty Film division assists with trial production and final product tuning for high-performance films and other extrusion applications. This cross-divisional model pools Covestro's comprehensive strengths in material science to deliver greater value to customers.

The Asia-Pacific region hosts some of the world's most dynamic and fastest-growing industries, and clients here need partners who can keep pace," said Lei Huanli, President of Covestro China. "This new center is our answer. Located in the heart of South China, it brings cross-business capabilities under one roof. This demonstrates our long-term commitment to the Chinese market and our firm conviction that true innovation comes from being close to customers and the industry."
