Belgium has three national languages, Dutch, French and German. English is also spoken and understood throughout most of the country, although more so in Flanders than Wallonia.
Business interactions are formal in Belgium. Belgians expect a high level of courtesy, and it is recommended that official titles (Dr, Professor, etc.) are used both in correspondence and in meetings. First names should not generally be used, unless the person is a long-standing contact.
Belgians are punctual and therefore appointment times should always be respected. A handshake is customary when greeting contacts and leaving a meeting.
Avoid scheduling business meetings in Belgium in July/August (summer vacation), over the Christmas and New Year’s period, just prior to and after Easter, and on work days either side of public holidays.
To ensure a meeting can be arranged, it is recommended to contact Belgian companies at least 4-6 weeks in advance.
Office attire is formal. A suit and tie for men is expected, and suits or conservative clothing for women.
