Dongfeng Motor unveils 1,000-volt electric drive, megawatt-level charging prototypes

Gasgoo Munich- Dongfeng Motor rolled out prototypes of a 1,000-volt electric drive system and a megawatt-class fast charger at its Global Innovation Center on July 29, expanding its technology portfolio for next-generation high-voltage electric vehicles.

The two products remain at the prototype stage. Dongfeng has not disclosed a timetable for series production or the commercial deployment of the charging equipment.

Known as the iD5-300SN, the new unit is Dongfeng's first electric drive designed for a 1,000-volt vehicle architecture. It uses a silicon carbide power module rated to withstand 1,500 volts and operates across a voltage range of 450 to 1,000 volts. Dongfeng Motor said the design is compatible with existing 800-volt platforms and can be extended to future 1,200-volt applications.

The drive delivers peak power of 300 kW. An integrated boost-charging function reuses the motor windings to raise the incoming voltage, allowing vehicles to achieve charging power of up to 180 kW when connected to widely available 500-volt or 750-volt fast chargers.

According to Dongfeng Motor, the unit offers 30% greater power density than its previous-generation product and achieves competitive efficiency under the CLTC test cycle. It will join the company's Mach Power technology portfolio and support the first 1,000-volt model planned for the EPICLAND brand.

Dongfeng Motor described the accompanying megawatt charger as its first high-power charging system developed entirely in-house. Its core cabinet is rated at 1.2 MW and can be combined with additional cabinets to provide at least 2.4 MW of total site capacity.

A single connector can deliver peak power of 1.5 MW and peak current of 1,500 amperes, with support for vehicle architectures ranging from 150 to 1,000 volts. Dongfeng Motor claims overall efficiency of at least 96.7%, placing the system in China's highest energy-efficiency category under the country's updated standards for charging equipment.

The modular design is intended to support both passenger and commercial vehicles. Dongfeng Motor plans to develop additional variants with higher output, although charging performance in actual use will depend on the vehicle's battery, voltage architecture, thermal-management capability and the power available at the charging site.

Speaking at the rollout ceremony, Mr. You Zheng, Deputy President of Dongfeng Motor Corporation, positioned the two prototypes as part of a broader technology roadmap spanning solid-state batteries, high-voltage electric drives, megawatt charging and modular vehicle platforms.

He also called on Dongfeng subsidiary Yutron Technology to work with charging-infrastructure operators on deploying compatible systems. Such cooperation will be essential if the higher charging capability is to translate into shorter charging times for passenger vehicles and electric commercial fleets.

Dongfeng Motor said the prototypes demonstrate that it has established in-house capabilities in ultra-high-voltage propulsion and megawatt charging hardware. The automaker intends to apply the technologies across its passenger and commercial vehicle operations, although their broader impact will depend on production readiness, vehicle compatibility and the availability of sufficiently powerful charging infrastructure.
