MILAN (Thomson Financial) - Fiat SpA is aiming for an operating profit of 3.7 bln eur in 2008, up from an expected 2.9 bln this year and aims to reach 5.0 bln in 2010, CEO Sergio Marchionne said in an interview with Sunday's daily La Stampa.

'The target for Fiat (nyse: FIA - news - people ) is to reach an operating profit of 3.7 bln. This year it was 2.9 and we want to reach 5 in 2010,' he told the daily.

He added that the the Alfa Romeo brand has to pursue the same re-launch process as did the Fiat brand.

'This is a commitment that will take two, three, or maybe even four years with the objective of creating in Italy the equivalent of BMW in Germany. Lancia, on the other hand, is a brand that can behave arrogantly since in Europe it is considered an example of style. And next year to the success of the Ypsilon and Musa (models) we'll add the new Delta (model),' he said.
