Foxconn makes another splash, unveiling three new vehicles

Edited by Taylor From Gasgoo

Gasgoo Munich- Foxconn recently rolled out three reference vehicle models — the MODEL A+, MODEL K+, and MODEL K — spanning a B-segment SUV, a youth-oriented model, and a light commercial truck for the Japanese market. All three ride on Foxconn's open platform, letting automaker clients tailor exterior design, powertrain, and interior to fit their brand identity.

This marks the third batch of reference models since the MIH open platform launched in 2021. Foxconn has already secured contract-manufacturing deals with clients including Lotus, yet large-scale production orders remain elusive. The latest trio is designed to showcase the full capabilities of platform-based manufacturing to prospective clients.

Meanwhile, Foxconn is making a significant push into the automotive supply chain. Hon Hai Technology Group announced that Foxconn investment arm Lin Yin will acquire a 50% stake in Mitsubishi Electric Mobility, a unit of Mitsubishi Electric. The deal is valued at 115 billion yen — roughly 5.4 billion yuan — and is slated to close in October 2027. Mitsubishi Electric expects the sale to trigger a book loss of roughly 100 billion yen.

Mitsubishi Electric Mobility specializes in automotive electrical equipment and powertrain components, supplying several mainstream Japanese automakers. The divestment reflects how traditional Japanese parts suppliers are retreating under the pressure of electrification. For Foxconn, the deal offers a fast track to technical expertise and established customer networks within Japan's automotive supply chain.

Foxconn Chairman Young-Way Liu has repeatedly stressed that the group has no ambition to launch its own car brand. Instead, the goal is to become an ODM contract-manufacturing giant for the automotive industry.
