From China Validation to Global Value: How the World Is Rethinking Chinese Automotive Solutions

Bohao From Gasgoo
For decades, the global automotive industry followed a relatively clear innovation model: technology was largely defined by global automakers, suppliers developed around them, and markets primarily served as places for consumption and application.
Today, that model is changing.
On one side, more technologies and products developed and validated at scale in China are entering the global automotive supply chain. From power batteries and automotive chips to intelligent driving and smart cockpits, China's automotive supply chain is moving beyond "global manufacturing and supply" toward "technology export and solution co-development."
On the other, global automakers and technology companies are taking a fresh look at the value of the Chinese market. Beyond its massive NEV market, China offers complex road environments, fast-changing user demands and a highly responsive supply chain. For emerging technologies such as ADAS and smart cockpits, China is increasingly becoming a high-intensity real-world testing ground where technologies are tested, refined and scaled.
Chinese solutions are validated in China and taken global; global solutions are tested in China and evolve further. China is becoming not only a place where innovation happens, but also an important pressure-testing ground for global automotive technology.
This is the shift that the 2026 Gasgoo Awards seeks to explore.

Why Is China Becoming a Global Testing Ground for Automotive Innovation?

As NEVs and intelligent vehicles rapidly gain popularity, China is creating one of the world's most demanding environments for automotive technology validation. A massive user base, complex road scenarios, rapid product iteration and intense supply chain competition are accelerating the journey from R&D to mass production and large-scale deployment.
According to Gasgoo Research Institute, the penetration of ADAS/AD and smart cockpit technologies in China's passenger vehicle market has continued to rise, with intelligent technologies expanding rapidly from premium to mainstream models. In the first half of 2026, installation volumes of key ADAS components, including LiDAR and air suspension, continued to grow.
LiDAR provides a clear example. In the first half of 2026, approximately 2.25 million LiDAR units were installed in China's passenger vehicle market. Hesai Technology ranked first with 769,878 units and a 34.2% market share, followed by Huawei Technologies with 700,466 units and a 31.1% share. Together, they accounted for 65.3% of the market. Innovusion and RoboSense ranked third and fourth, with shares of 15.3% and 14.0%, respectively.
It is worth noting that RoboSense's figures exclude optional configurations. The company had previously disclosed its overall first-half business figures in an announcement to the Hong Kong Stock Exchange.
LiDAR is therefore no longer simply a frontier technology for high-level intelligent driving. In China, it has gone through the full cycle from technology introduction and large-scale vehicle deployment to supply chain competition.
Competition is shifting from "whether the technology exists" to "whether it can be mass-produced, cost-competitive and continuously improved."
The same trend can be seen in smart cockpits. As consumers demand better interaction, information presentation and intelligent services, technologies such as HUDs, AR-HUDs, cockpit domain controllers, domain-control chips, center displays and voice systems continue to evolve.
In the first half of 2026, AR-HUD installations in China's passenger vehicle market reached approximately 808,000 units. E-Lead Electronic ranked first with 159,094 units and a 19.7% market share, followed by Foryou Multimedia, Zejing Electronics, Huawei Technologies and Future Black Technology. The top five suppliers together accounted for approximately 74.2% of the market.
This is what distinguishes China from a market that simply serves as a place to sell vehicles.
For ADAS, complex urban roads, diverse road users and long-tail scenarios require technologies to withstand continuous real-world testing. For smart cockpits, rapidly changing user expectations and intense competition continue to raise the bar for user experience.
A technology must not only work, but also withstand the test of large-scale deployment, real users and market competition. A product must not only move from zero to one, but also solve the cost, engineering and supply chain challenges of scaling from one to one hundred.
As more technologies are validated in this environment, the value of China's market goes beyond sales volume. It is increasingly becoming a source of real-world validation that can inform the global automotive industry.
For global Tier 1 suppliers, China's fast-changing customer demands and highly integrated supply chain are also becoming important parts of their global innovation strategies.
Valeo has incorporated China into its global innovation network, strengthening local R&D while bringing selected Chinese-developed innovations to overseas markets. ZF's China team led the development of an active rear-wheel steering project that entered production in Zhangjiagang in 2025. Its steer-by-wire technology was also first mass-produced in China and deployed on the NIO ET9, with plans to enter the European market.
China is therefore becoming an important node where global automotive companies participate in innovation, validation and iteration.
This is where "China validation" begins its journey toward "global value."

Chinese Solutions Are Beginning to Shape Global Automotive Technology

China is becoming an important testing ground for global automotive innovation. At the same time, technologies validated in China are increasingly entering the global automotive supply chain.
At Auto China 2026 in Beijing, Gasgoo CEO Tina Zhou described the show's most significant milestone as "the comprehensive rise of Chinese technology solutions, along with the rapidly growing acceptance of Chinese technologies among overseas automakers and Tier 1 suppliers."
A European automaker's procurement team visiting Beijing put it simply: "We need to be faster and more efficient."
China's automotive industry was once primarily a participant in the global supply chain. Today, intense domestic competition is accelerating the development of technologies, products and engineering capabilities, making them increasingly attractive to global automakers seeking greater efficiency and technological advancement.
Volkswagen and Horizon Robotics, for example, established a joint venture to integrate Chinese intelligent driving capabilities into global product development. Momenta's intelligent driving solutions have entered partnerships with global automakers including Mercedes-Benz and BMW. CATL has deepened cooperation with international automakers such as Ford through technology licensing. Huawei's Qiankun intelligent driving platform has entered Audi's partnership ecosystem, while Horizon Robotics' Journey series chips and related solutions are being incorporated into overseas vehicle programs.
More Chinese suppliers in intelligent driving, electrification and smart cockpit technologies are also participating in the development, sourcing and localization of global vehicle programs.
Going global does not simply mean replicating a China-specific product overseas. A solution with genuine global value must first be validated in China in terms of technology, engineering and scale, and then adapt to differences in regulations, costs, user needs, supply chains and organizational systems across markets.

What Makes a China Solution Globally Valuable?

For Chinese automotive innovation to succeed globally, the key question is whether a technology can withstand real-world industry challenges and continue to create value across markets.
The 2026 Gasgoo Awards will evaluate innovations across four dimensions: technology innovation and commercialization, market and operational capabilities, social and sustainability value, and expert assessment.
The judging process will focus on four key criteria:
Real-world validation. Industry value. Global adaptability. Long-term capabilities.
Real-world validation is the foundation. Does the solution address a genuine industry challenge? Has it completed engineering development, entered mass production and gained customer and market recognition? The Gasgoo Awards look beyond technical specifications to whether an innovation has made its way into vehicles, production lines and the market.
Industry value asks what an innovation brings to the automotive industry. Beyond technical performance, factors such as cost, efficiency, quality, safety, user experience and supply chain collaboration will help determine its broader impact.
Global adaptability becomes critical once a technology enters overseas markets. Differences in regulations, data security, cost structures, supply chains and user expectations require Chinese solutions to adapt their technology, products and business models to local markets.
Long-term capabilities determine whether that value can be sustained. Continuous innovation, organizational capabilities, replicability and long-term commercial potential will all matter. Securing one mass-production program or overseas project is only a milestone; the ability to keep iterating and expand across more models and markets is what creates lasting global competitiveness.
The 2026 Gasgoo Awards are therefore not simply looking for technologies that are "ahead of the curve," nor only for companies that have already gone global. They seek innovation cases that can move from real-world validation to industry value, from China deployment to global adaptation, and ultimately to long-term capability building.
The value of Chinese solutions lies not only in reaching global markets, but also in helping define the next chapter of the global automotive industry.

2026 Gasgoo Awards: China Solutions, Global Value

The Gasgoo Awards, initiated by Gasgoo, are guided by the mission of "Discover great companies, promote innovative technologies, and empower industry professionals".
In 2026, the eighth Gasgoo Awards will take "China Solutions, Global Value" as its annual theme, covering key sectors including ADAS/AD, smart cockpits, intelligent chassis, automotive chips, automotive software and artificial intelligence, powertrain electrification, charging and battery swapping & thermal management, vehicle body, interior and exterior, new materials and advanced manufacturing, embodied intelligence and cross-domain technologies.
This year, the Awards will broaden the definition of "China Solutions" from individual technologies to broader industrial capabilities.
A China Solution is a technology, product, engineering system or industrial collaboration capability that is developed or shaped in China, validated by China's automotive industry and capable of creating value globally.
The evaluation will therefore look beyond the innovation itself to examine its development context, industrial implementation, market validation and global adaptability.
The 2026 Gasgoo Awards will seek to answer several key questions:
What real-world challenges is the global automotive industry facing?
Why are the corresponding solutions emerging in China?
How have these solutions been validated through mass production, customers and the market?
What localization is required to take a China Solution global?
Which capabilities can truly be replicated, delivered and sustained across markets?
Leveraging Gasgoo's supply chain database covering more than 320,000 companies, together with its industry research and corporate resources, the Awards will combine company submissions, industry data, expert assessment and market validation to identify innovations with genuine industry value and global potential.
The outstanding companies, technologies and industrial practices identified through the Awards will also be further documented in the China Automotive Innovation Casebook, creating a lasting knowledge base for the global automotive industry.
