GAC Group sets up Powertrain BU to drive integrated tech strategy

Gasgoo Munich- GAC Group has carved out its core powertrain operations into a standalone business unit (BU), marking a further step in its ongoing restructuring under the "Panyu Action" program, according to the group's WeChat account.

The move follows earlier reorganizations of its HYPTEC & AION and Trumpchi BUs, and reflects a broader effort to streamline operations across its self-owned business portfolio.

According to the company, the restructuring is intended to strengthen control over critical parts of its industrial chain while also supporting its wider strategic transition and enabling more flexible external partnerships.

As electrification and smart vehicle technologies reshape the industry, GAC is prioritizing the integration of conventional and electric powertrains with intelligent systems as part of its 2026 roadmap. Within this shift, propulsion technologies are becoming increasingly central to competitive differentiation.

To convert its accumulated R&D capabilities into sustainable system-level advantages, GAC has consolidated previously fragmented functions—ranging from development and manufacturing to supply chain and sales—into the new Powertrain BU. Positioned as the group's first fully integrated component-level unit, it will build on advances in hybrid systems, internal combustion engines, and range extenders, while delivering a broader portfolio of propulsion solutions and core technology innovations.

The new BU will operate under an Integrated Product Development (IPD) framework, enabling closer alignment with vehicle divisions and R&D teams to accelerate product cycles and improve coordination. Internally, it is expected to function as both a source of technological innovation and a stable supply backbone, ensuring rapid and precise responses to evolving market demand.

Externally, the Powertrain BU will pursue a more market-oriented approach, expanding into areas such as technology partnerships and component supply. By optimizing organizational structures and development processes, GAC aims to translate its engineering strengths into stronger product competitiveness, improved cost efficiency, and faster time-to-market—ultimately delivering greater value for both the group and its partners.
