Shanghai, China - General Motors is expanding educational partnerships with universities from Michigan to China to help find solutions to manufacturing challenges.
GM and Shanghai Jiaotong University (SJTU), one of Shanghai's leading educational institutions, signed an agreement Sunday to establish the GM Body Manufacturing Satellite Lab.
Separate cooperation agreements also were signed by three GM joint ventures in China - Shanghai GM, Jinbei GM and the Pan Asia Technical Automotive Center (PATAC).
The satellite lab, located on the SJTU campus, is an extension of the GM R&D Satellite Research Laboratory at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. The new lab will carry out joint research in body manufacturing, evaluation system improvement and manufacturing technical design.
Sixty university professors and post-graduates will conduct research at the satellite lab. A review committee comprised of representatives of GM, Shanghai GM, Jinbei GM, PATAC and the University of Michigan will select and evaluate projects, and conduct regular project reviews.
"The GM Body Manufacturing Satellite Lab will benefit both General Motors and China," said Dr. Larry Burns, vice president of planning and research and development for GM, who attended Sunday's ceremony. "It will help GM to continually improve the quality of products and services we offer in China, while providing researchers in Shanghai access to the tremendous expertise and resources of the University of Michigan."
Said Jun Ni, director of the S.M. Wu Manufacturing Research Center at the University of Michigan's College of Engineering: "We believe that it is not only important to make sure that our work is relevant, but also to have close interaction with engineers and researchers affiliated with GM around the world."
"Our relationship with the satellite lab in Shanghai will give our students a good opportunity to learn from real-world problems that affect China's automotive industry," Ni said.
The satellite lab extends GM's relationship with Shanghai Jiaotong University, which includes the 1997 establishment of the GM-Shanghai Jiaotong University Technology Institute, a unique institution that is carrying out training and development programs to support GM and its China ventures.
General Motors is the world's largest vehicle manufacturer. GM designs, manufactures and markets cars, trucks, engines, transmissions and locomotives worldwide. GM has about $2 billion in participated investment and approximately 3,500 employees in China, where it operates four joint ventures and two wholly owned foreign enterprises.
